I finished reading this book this morning. Overall, it was very good. Aldous Huxley did an amazing job of creating a whole new world where people are in a sense always happy, but also in a way they are not human. They live in a Utopia of sorts but the place Huxley created is not a place I would want to live in, where people are conditioned throughout their childhood to meet the social patterns of the Utopia. Free will seems virtually nonexistent, and those who are too intelligent are sent away to preserve society's stability. People are made to be more or less mentally apt to meet a certain job, the stupid ones operating elevators and the smart ones writing propaganda.
I wonder if socialism ever took hold if society would end up similar to this. Obviously, we don't have some for the technology Huxley describes in his novel, but would we become the mindless slaves that roam throughout Brave New World? Would we be pawns to preserve a superficial happiness, to ensure stability, when at times, it is instability that reminds us that we are human?
Overall, I recommend the book to anyone. it is thought provoking, and a good story overall.
Time to get back into A Clockwork Orange.....
