I absolutely love god games and RTS hybrids (like Sacrifice, Citizen Kabuto (has not aged well), Battlezone 2, and the ones mentioned above).
Back then I didn't follow game news. So I don't know why the genres died. I guess the sales were bad? I think in today's market there would be an audience for both. Experimental and lower budget games are kinda hot again. In case of a resurgence, they will have my support. :D
It's not. Go look at Birthdays coming to PS4.
Some God-games I have fond memories of (not all of them are great, mind you, but I liked them)
Populous (PC/SNES)
Sim City (PC/SNES)
Sim City 2k (PC/SNES)
Sim-Earth (SNES)
Sim-Ant (SNES) - this game is downright hilarious. You're the ant God!
Act Raiser (SNES) - although it was hybrid God-game/action game
Tyrants (Sega Genesis) - if you've never played this, I recommend it
Power Monger (Sega Genesis)
Masters of Magic (PC) - more strategy, but still very God-like
Railroad Tycoon (PC)
Roller-coaster Tycoon (PC)
Dungeon Keeper (PC)
Black & White (PC)
Spore (PC)
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. But enjoy if you decide to pick any of them up!
