I bought Arctic Edge the week it came out. And for a week the on-line races were great fun. I won half a dozen and progressed from Grunt to Rookie. Now the hacked PSPs have joined in. With all the cars unlocked and unlimited boost races are won now by cheats who have already achieved hero level. They've overrun the leader-boards as well with times of three seconds posted for every one of the courses. There's a demo of how to do it on YouTube posted by someone so inept at actually controlling a car that it is painful to watch. I don't often play games on-line but if this is what it's like in other games then why do people even bother?

Why Apple would get a warning sticker at Boots the Chemist

I have a problem with iPhone and iPod touch games. All those wonderful looking screen shots omit the one thing or things that get in the way of the whole igaming experience: your fingers and thumbs. It's like sitting in the cinema trying to see past a constant stream of people getting up to go for popcorn. Those fingers, intruding into the shot, would get you a warning sticker on your holiday snaps at Boots: "try to keep your fingers away from the lens for better results". It's not as if the screen feels that pleasant. Add to that the worry about finger marks - and please don't tell me no-one minds the finger-marks on their gadgets. In the PSP Go unboxing Luke was fretting about the finger marks within a minute of the thing coming out of its cellophane. Touching images just isn't normal. We don't go round art galleries feeling up the Picassos. No, I don't believe that touching the screen image adds to the experience. It only detracts. Leave me my buttons and analogue nubs - that's how games are meant to be played.
More games than they can handle

I asked in Game if they had Dragon Quest VIII. Computer said yes but the assistant couldn't justify the time it would have taken to find it in the six crates of old PS2 games they have in the store room. I overheard the shop manager saying something to the assistant about needing to get a list together but what I think they need is a warehouse sale.
Looking forward to . . .
