Another Black Ops Rant

I continue to play Black Ops even though I constantly complain about some of the gameplay. I'm pretty sure it's because all of my PS3 buddies play it, and I'm kind of an online multiplayer junky so I usually play what my friends play, and for whatever reason, they keep playing this abortion.

I just got done playing a quick session and noticed that when you're doing really well and you have a really nice killstreak going, the game doesn't like that and needs to put a stop to it immediately. I had a 19 killstreak going, and noticed that enemies continued to respawn behind me, making it impossible to go on without dying. At first I thought I was paranoid, but it happened again and again after a bunch of kills. I never respawn behind enemies, and if I do, it's because I'm playing capture the flag, and the enemy is in my base.

Another thing I noticed was when the killstreak grows, your accuracy drops. I was running around and noticed a guy camping by his flag in HARDCORE capture the flag, AKA this guy should be dead in one shot. I stopped, took aim with the AUG, and Fired. Missed. The guy didn't notice I'm shooting at him. Took aim again, fired, nothing. The guy turns and starts shooting randomly, somehow hits me, I'm dead. I wanted to throw my controller through the TV.

I'm not one of those guys who is terrible and it's hard to watch me play. I can play FPS's. I've been playing this garbage for almost 2 months now and am noticing these little things that make this game so annoying. It's like Activision is trying to level the playing field for people who are new to games. I can understand the logic in that, but it shouldn't come at the cost of driving me insane.

Making Beer is Sick

I recently got a beer making kit for Christmas. My dad asked me if I wanted anything specific, and it was the first thing I could think of and wasn't even sure if I really wanted it to be honest. Well, come Christmas day, I did get it, and not much else because they are pretty expensive. Yesterday, I decided to give it a shot. I made an amber ale with my cousin, and so far, so good. It takes about two and a half hours to boil everything and get it ready for storage, but it smells awesome. It's gonna take 3 weeks to ferment to become actual alcohol, but it's definitely worth it. If anyone is interested in getting a beer making kit, it's a good buy. The kit itself is expensive, but once that's out of the way, your looking at $15 to $20 bucks for ingredient packs, which give you enough ingredients to make about 50 beers. Totally worth it.

Now I just need to think of what kind of beer to make next....

Call of Duty: Black Ops Passes the $1 Billion Mark....

I recently read the article on Gamespot that The newest Call of Duty has earned more than $1 Billion. Impressive numbers, sure. Activision should be proud in a business sense, but that doesnt mean they've made a great game. The game is not great. It has huge problems that Modern Warfare 2 did not have, and the patches that have come out haven't fixed much.

The best thing that ever happened to the Call of Duty franchise was Infinity Ward, and Activision threw them to the curb like a christmas tree in January. They had the major innovative ideas that allowed for the franchise to grow in a positive direction, but now that they're gone, I can't help but assume that the franchise will simply follow a blueprint and will not deviate from the norm.

Not only that, but I'm hearing the next installment will be featured in space with "future soldiers" and other Halo-esque features. This is where the franchise is going? I understand that they are running out of wars to cover in their games, but we already have futuristic first person shooters with high tech weapons. Halo, Mass Effect, Lost Planet, Killzone, and even Resistance has the futuristic elements even though it's based in the early 20th century.

My advice to Activision is to bring in some fresh minds to fix the game part of your games. Sales are great, but they won't always be there if you continue to put the same game on the shelves every year.

Legend of Zelda: A Thing of the Past?

I was recently looking at some videos online when I came across a rendition of the Song of Storms, played on the Cello. It was almost chilling how accurately and beautifully done it was. It started off slow, but really grabbed my attention because I could picture this song being used in a commercial to promote a Zelda game or, dare I say it, a Zelda movie. It was that good.

I then remembered that there is a new Zelda game coming out for the Wii, but since I no longer own a Wii, I never looked the game up. I decided to do just that, and honestly, my excitement that had been built up from a fan tribute song was suddenly gone. I was not impressed by what I saw from the newest entry to the franchise, Skyward Sword.

One of my favorite games of all time is Ocarina of Time. Looking back at it now, the graphics are nothing special, but they were legendary for the time being. It was an incredibly original RPG that took a character that many had loved, and blew it into an epic status. There were no longer any doubts that The Legend of Zelda was a top-notch, first-tier game.

Fans became angry when The Wind Waker came out. Why? Because it was no longer realistic. I actually like the game, but not because of it's visuals. The Wind Waker became almost unintentionally the split that the series needed to give the franchise two identities, a cartoonish identity that belonged to whatever Nintendo's handheld gaming system was at the time, and a realistic identity for it's more technical console.

However, this new console game seems to be stepping back into the cartoonish world that belongs with handheld gaming. I was looking at the pictures, and they are way too vibrant for me to consider the graphics to be realistic. It almost looks like it's a run of the mill, Disney game that is rushed onto shelves in time for the movie to hit theaters.

I know this isn't the case, the game isn't being rushed, but the whole reason for the outcry of fans when Wind Waker came out was that the game isn't realistic, so why take it seriously. Ocarina of Time was realistic for it's era, but technology continues to improve. Why isn't new technology used to make sure these Zelda games are keeping pace in the realism front? As a huge fan of the franchise, it's incredibly frustrating to see Nintendo overlook me as a loyal fan and customer and attempt to replace me and those like me with a new generation of young kids who will be wooed by the pretty colors they see on TV. I know Nintendo is hoping that I will buy the game because it has "The Legend of Zelda" on it. I'm a fan of the franchise, but this isn't one of the games that I grew up with.

David Jaffe

I've been following David Jaffe's blog and Twitter for more than a year now and the only reason is to find out what game he is making. He is the creator of Twisted Metal and dropped the hint in Head On that the franchise is coming to the PS3. It actually played a huge factor in why I bought a much more expensive PS3 opposed to a 360. Now I just feel stupid.

He recently tweeted that he "wished" he were making a new Twisted Metal because the blueprint is there and he would just have to follow it. Which is true. It's a great franchise and the work is pretty much done for him. But now that my hopes are shattered, I'm no longer following him. I can't. I put up with his awful updates about nothing and his tweets about what he's having for breakfast. Honestly David, no one cares. You wouldn't have followers if it weren't for your previous great games. This means they want to hear about what you're working on, not what your plans are for the weekend at Disneyland. Even if you just talk about gaming in general, that's acceptable. Your various thoughts put on random video blogs about stupid Sh!+ is honestly very hard to watch and I feel embarrassed for you at times.

So that's it. I'm done. Don't care about a new IP, don't care about what you had for breakfast, definitely don't care about you loving being a dad. Announce the game that is destined to be disappointing, and stop talking. But don't worry David, it can't be any worse than Calling All Cars. :D

Call of Duty / Street Fighter

I love the Call of Duty series, and always buy the games when they come out, mainly because the online is really fun. However, the games are way too similar and the new Street Fighter game made me think twice about the series.

Super Street Fighter 4 came out this week, and I was actually kind of irritated that the game looked exactly the same as the original, with a few new characters and levels. I know others were excited about the release, but I just didn't want to spend the money for something that looked like it should have been DLC in the first place. Then I saw the price, and thought differently. If you don't know, the game is $39.99 instead of the normal $59.99, which is very fair. I think Capcom realized people would recognize the similarities to the original Street Fighter IV, so they decided to knock the price down to hep sales. In all fairness, I still won't be buying the game, and wish I never bought the original a year ago. (It got old really quickly for me) But I think Capcom made a really smart business move with the price drop.

Call of Duty, on the other hand, will put out the same game, with a different war attached to it, and call it original, and still charge people the $59.99. It's getting a little ridiculous. Sure, the weapons selection have been different from World War II to Present Day and now with Black Ops likely the Cold War in the 1980's, but still, the games will be the same engine, with minor tweaks, just as it always is. I think Activision should follow in the footsteps of Capcom, and give us a break. Make the game a little cheaper since they can punch out a new game every year for the same price, and give us a $30 DLC. Most hardcore CoD fans are giving them $90.00 a year to play these cookie cutter games.

Activision - I know you're running a business, but think about your customers, and not just the almighty dollar. It could go a long way.

Playstation Move Thoughts...

When I first saw the general design and function of the new motion controller, I wasn't sure what to think. It was a cool demo, and it's interesting to see if it works as smoothly as advertised, but I have some general fears about the product.

Is Sony slowly becoming Nintendo? Does this mean the new focus will be creating absurd attachments to the controller as a cheap money maker? Is there going to be a huge influx of very subpar games just to create a purpose for the controllers? Will it effect the focus or development of the regular games that PS3 owners expect? I guess only time will tell...

The Who Blew

I watched the Superbowl last night and was pretty excited about seeing The Who at the half. When they went on my jaw dropped in the worst way possible. A lot of people are giving them credit because of their age and the respect that's due to them. I'm calling it like it is. Pathetic. Roger Daltrey couldn't hit any notes, and Pete Townshend wasn't even playing his guitar. All of the music was from people who weren't members of The Who, and Daltrey had so much time to get his pipes back up to par. It was honestly hard to watch. Townshend's fake windmill strums were embarrassing. He wan't even touching the strings when they showed it up close. It just goes to show you that the NFL needs to book acts before all of the talent runs dry. I recommend any band not in their 60's.

Darksiders of War...

For a while, I've seen some previews for Darksiders and was strangely drawn to it. Didn't know why, but I was, and I just picked it up a few days ago. I didn't start playing it right away and just happened to pop it in yesterday. After about 10 minutes of playing, I realized I was drawn to it because it reminded me of God of War. The style of the game is almost exactly the same. You run around, pummeling mythical creatures, and when they're close to dying, you have the option of brutally ending their life, much like Kratos does. Heck, the main characters name is War. I didn't actually pick up on it until I looked at the souls system. In God of War, you collect the little blue and red and green floating things as health and currency, its basically the same thing in this, except their souls. The story is sort of similar too. War has had his back turned on by the powers that be and needs to fight for redemption. Don't get me wrong, the game is really cool, but it's basically a watered down God of War with a modern twist.

9 = Over-Hyped

It was early summer, and I had just seen the trailer to 9. It looked cool to say the least. Tim Burton was highlighted as the producer for the film, who I think is a brilliant filmmaker. I was sold. As time went on, the trailers kept airing on TV, and I was ready for September 9th to see the movie. I look at movie times online, and realize the movies only 80 minutes long. I was a little discouraged, but still pretty excited to see the movie. I get in the theater and as the movie goes on, I realize the movie was so overhyped. The entire movie is dark and gloomy that you cant help but feel like you should be in a bad mood. There aren't enough characters. You have the nine good guys, but there's only one bad guy for a good part of the movie. The whole thing was such a downer. The worst part was the ending made me feel like the story was unfinished. They definitely used Tim Burton's name as a crutch to fill the seats, and I hate to say it, but I fell for it.
