Everytime someone makes a "Smash Bros should be on the DS" an Angel gets pimp slapped across the face.
The closest thing to Smash Bros on the DS right now is Jump Ultimate Stars. Its easy to play, its alot of fun, you don't need to know japanese, there are guides on this site that can be used for navigation, and if you find a Katakana chart online you can translate some of the words.

I looked it up and I think you can get about 50 bucks for a DS phat. If you consider 80$ an agreeable price for the upgrade then go for it. I think it's worth it because it is smaller, more compact, the screen is brighter even on the lowest setting. The microphone and power button have better placement and the system is overall more attractive. And, the stylus is bigger and far more comfortable.
I love DQ. I'm probably even more excited about Dragon quest monsters: Joker though. That game looks terrific. Iwrote a blog about the Japanese version, it was sweet.
