Summer Movie Season? Where's the substance?

This summer's movies have been pretty disappointing for the most part. Sure there are independent gems like Moon or 500 days of summer but there hasn't been a great deal of good movies from the summer blockbuster juggernaut. Last year the hype was on the Dark Knight as Heath Ledger had died the previous January and was a monumental success. Both critically and commercially. Iron Man with a standout performance from Robert Downey Jr was also a great movie during that period and so was Wall-E. Tropic Thunder and Pineapple express weren't that bad either.

However this summer we did start off on an interesting note with Star Trek but since then it's been one lame flick after another, whether it was Transformers, GI Joe, or Year One. Nothing really has been impresive or monumental. Up was probably the best movie of this summer in my opinion but since then nothing really good has come out of the theaters. Sure it's a matter of opinion, but Funny People and Bruno are both instantly forgettable comedies. Tropic Thunder had a lasting effect.

Perhaps the lack of good superhero movies this year played a pivotal role, but at the same time this year has been a big sex romp. Looking at how attractive Megan Fox is in Transformers, Olivia Wilde in Year One or Sienna Miller in GI JOE. No story, no substance. Granted they draw in viewers but what else? They aren't works of art. Most of them suck.
