Of course it's a fad, people will lose excitement eventually and it will quiet down. They'll only bring people back by releasing new Pokemon to catch and good enough combat and whatnot, as it is right now it won't last.
Just like the past few consoles I expect this one to also have a weird gamepad. Even the famed N64 had a horrendous gamepad, it was saved by its game lineup and local multiplayer.
They just lack the ability of understanding that gimmicky controls should never be the focus, and insist on these severely outdated consoles with weird controllers. Unless they pull a miracle out of nowhere this will likely be the Dreamcast of Nintendo, they can't get away with 2 disasters in a row.
