Dont know if this has been posted because I stopped reading at this post buuuuuuuut... Usually when it goes down like this.. completely its usually a big update.. like the new dashboard update took live down for ages but it was completely off... Usually you can still sign in on live but cant play any games... Thats always happend to me on maintenance days but major updates takes the whole thing down... Wonder what they're doing... They should mention what they are doing so we actually know whats going on. (Today is an update.. not maintenance.. I swear live went down about this time last year...)

Gold is worth the money. On a new xbox you should have like a 1month trial anyway I think. (For gold)

Profile - If you mean your gamertag/membership no its not free. In the UK it costs £40 for a 1 year membership.

Points - Microsoft points can be purchased at shops or with credit card over xbox live. (UK - £17.50/2100 MS points)

When you have either your membership code or point code and your connection from xbox to internet is there go to "Marketplace" and then "Redeem Code".

Yeah, sounds like its most likely an issue with one of your cables. When I got my RROD it seemingly came out of nowhere, so hopefully yours is ok!kcohen82
