[QUOTE="brandontwb"]I'm talking about consciousness. Do you need to grow or reproduce to be alive? brandontwb

Since nobody really understands what gives us consciousness, it's kind of hard to answer. Who knows, maybe we are just coded to think we are conscious.

Life is pretty much the ability to reproduce (not just sex, but divide cells etc.).

I know nobody understands what is consciousness. That's why I am bringing this topic up. Who's to say the processing of information itself isn't consciousness on some level?

We understand very clearly what you mean. No, computers are not alive. Try to do more research on computers and how they work.

[QUOTE="GabuEx"]

[QUOTE="Nibroc420"] I've got myself a university textbook on game development, and a PDF teaching me how to learn C++, but I hate learning such basic commands that it feels like i'm accomplishing nothing :(

A foundation is always the most boring part, but you can't build your house without it.

I know i need to learn basics before i can make anything cool. The basics are just super boring -.-

It can get a bit boring, but when you'll be done with the basics and start doing really fun programs you'll be glad that you did.

[QUOTE="Darkalfx"][QUOTE="xfactor19990"]So guys is Java a good language to know?Wasdie

Too broad. The language you will choose to use or learn really depends on what you're trying to do build. You'll often want to use the programming language that has the most feature and things you'll require to make the program. Java might or might not be what you want to learn, depending on what you're trying to achieve.

Well if you can program in Java you will learn the basics of object oriented programming and basic, rational programming. If you know those, adapting to other, widely used languages isn't that difficult.

For sure, if he learns Java he pretty much taught himself C#, I'm just saying that if he has a specific goal in mind other than taking up Java, maybe there's a language better suited for it.

[QUOTE="JigglyWiggly_"][QUOTE="Wasdie"]

Simple huh?

How about you write me some sockets in C and encode them with a special algorithm and send a string of 1 million numbers between 3 servers, encyrpted, and decrypt them, and then seive out all of the primes.

Good god... the horror... THE HORROR!!!

EZ MARINE TC, the easiest language is Assembly, you should try it. You will wuv it.

This is entirely false. Have you even coded before? Assembly will cause you to pull your own hair out.

As for Computer Science being terrible. It depends. It's taught terribly, but in practice it's a ton of fun, like a big brain teaser. They teach you syntax instead of logic, when honestly syntax is a google search away, but the actual logic can take you days/weeks to figure out. I find programming rather easy, it's the actual problem solving thats difficult. It's also impractical. In college you're writing complete programs alone, while in the real world that would rarely happen. You would most likely be working on certain aspects of functionality.

That's very true, in the real world programs are often pretty darn big and you'll be working with a team. So you're usually working on a specific part of the project and not the whole thing.

Yeah, I hate computer programing too. I had to take a class in basic computer programing last semester and I did terribly. It's just one of those things I can't wrap my head around.

Programming isnt for everyone, it takes a specific mindset/way of thinking and even if you do have it, a lot of people still think programming is incredibly boring. Its frankly quite sad :/

Sounds like programming is too hard for you. Which is great. It means that your one less person getting into my profession, less competition for programming jobs.Diablo-B
Don't be mean, the guy is just venting because he discovered what he's learning isnt for him. Its not like we have a lot of competition to begin with anyway.

Programming isn't about the languages at all. It's about the logical flow of things. If your good at that, then a company couldn't care less if you know the language you use or not, because thats not whats important. You can learn that fast as long as you know how to code. so.. obviously, you can't do logical flow well. I LOVE programming, it's so relaxing.. it's creative, and it has infinite possibilities. fastr
Exactly, if you have the mind for it programming can be one of the most creative fields out there. You can pretty much do anything, you just need to think of a way to make it. I couldn't live without programming.

Well they're not the girl scouts new method of selling cookies. I mean, if they're not aliens, what other explanation is there for them? They're certainly things humans couldn't make. That one that floats above Jerusalem and then shoots off instantaneously at incredible speed. Thats just not explainable really.

We have very little information on what kind of phenomenons might be happening out there. We haven't even finished charting every specie on our own planet or went all the way down our oceans. Some things we just can't explain yet, but we must not jump to conclusions either.
