I've felt like doing what you did 100 times. I just never do it because management's the problem, so why take it out on an employee? ...

...If I were you, I would have told him what Castlevania was, and then asked him what games he likes, just to see what was going on. Maybe he only plays wargames or something.

You're right, but like I posted earlier, this was just the time when I couldn't help it. I agree that management is part of the problem; after all, they hire the employees.

But ya, you would think there are people who love games that would love that job for little pay but they don't or can't give it to them because that guy is there because he just wants an easy job and shows up on time. There's always like 5 reasons for every problem.

Of all the stores I've been to, I only know of one that I actually like going to. The guys there have been there for years and they are like gaming encyclopedias; plus, they get paid well, which is why they've been there for so long. The owner and manager don't settle for someone who just shows up on time so going there is a pleasure. That's what I think game stores should be. I go there, talk games, then buy games, it's great. The problem is I don't live in that city any more and have yet to find a store that even comes close. But that's what I'd like to see, more stores like that, where going there doesn't feel so much like a chore. How about you? This goes to all of you... what would you like to see in a game store? What would make the perfect store for you?

I definitely feel your pain. I've had some weird experiences with people who work at game stores myself. It's probably due to the fact that they're up to their ears in snot-nosed, annoying punk kids all day, so some of them can become abrasive. I'm not excusing their behavior, but helping you to possibly understand it.

In your case, you're dealing with someone who doesn't know much about the job they've taken. Which isn't surprising considering the pay-level. For instance, it would be nice if every 7-11 employee was kind, polite, spoke perfect english, didn't come to work high, etc, etc, etc, etc.... but at $6/an hour, it's impossible for employers to be too picky. Heh.

You're right. I'd love to see a store where they keep out those snot-nosed, annoying punk kids, a game store for grownups. Pay the employees more, which should allow you to get people who like the work and know what they're talking about. I think gamers would gravitate to a place like that. I would.
Your behavior gave the clerk a great story to tell his friends about the incredible dorks that come into video game stores. WOWBatchdack

Out of all the bad customer service stories this is possibly the lamest one I ever heard. Had the topic poster been "normal" or "civilized" he would have simply told the employee what Castlevania is and asked him to check it while making small talk about the game, but walking away without saying anything is kind of rude, especially since he just asked you a question about a very old game with the newer versions only being released on the DS.

Yeah so gamestore employees might not know 100% about every game that was ever released but does it matter and can you blame them? I doubt you would know the release and the price point of the Hannah Montana game. Just a week a go I went to EB to buy a new strategy game and the guy told me politely that he didn't know about any good ones being released, which was a stupid comment, should I have given him the death stare and walked out of the store? That would just have made me a dick. It's not as though he started screaming at me and calling me an idiot for buying strategy games.

Yeah, you're both probably right, but that was not the first time I'd had something of that nature happen at a store. I'm usually polite to them because I know their job is not easy on most days, but I guess this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Oh and I didn't give him the death stare, I probably had a sad look on my face :(.

that was pretty stupid.
he should at least have looked it up on the computer or something.summer_star17x
That's what I thought. All he had to do is go over to the computer and check. Anyone can ring something up on a register but I'd rather have someone that can answer a question about games and if need be discuss games intelligently. That's what made me think whether this was just another case of an employee who doesn't care or is it more of an indication of the quality of employees that are hired for this kind of job. If it were me I'd ask questions about games and gaming in general when interviewing someone for a job like this one.

I know that we all have our fair share of horror stories about customer service at our respective game stores. I hardly ever post (1 post in over a year) but I just had to share this and see what everyone thought about it. I visited a local game store that shall remain nameless today looking for Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow for the GBA. I walked up to the nice employee and asked: "Do you have any copies of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow for the GBA?" To which he replied "What's Castlevania?" With that reply, my mind was flooded with a stream of crappy game store customer service memories. I turned around, walked away and left the store without another word. This got me to thinking... what would I like to see in a game store? What changes would I make if I were in charge? I would add better service and more knowledgeable staff, for starters. Perhaps better layout and more welcoming atmosphere. Now I post the question to you folks. What do you think? What would you do?
