Easy: Killer 7 for the gamecube/ps2. I won't expound in great detail, but suffice it to say that it's one of the most unique, cryptic and symbolically-complex games ever made. It's ostensibly a FPS (sort of) detailing the exploits of a group of assassins (sort of) trying to stop a terrorist group (sort of), but anyone who's played the game knows that's a woefully insufficient description of what you actually experience playing the game and unraveling the plot. It has a surreal aesthetic and mood that will remind you of directors like Lynch, Jodorowsky, Cronenberg. Some of the images and concepts in the game will haunt you long after you're done playing. No wonder its GameSpot forum is still hopping 4 years after its release.

I'm also a sucker for a great story, and Killer 7 is absolutely my favorite game of all time, so I felt like I had to plug it in this thread. :)

You might also take a liking to the game's unique control scheme, which is an odd combo of FPS, RPG and adventure game.

Ah yes, the wiimote-as-cellphone angle. Loved it in NMH; it could make for some amazingly immersive moments. You're walking alone, it's dark, and then suddenly BRRRRRIIIIIIIIINGG...

Good luck trying to sell a crazy cel-shaded game to a bunch of dorks who won't play anything that isn't a brown FPS.

Considering the first No More Heroes was a social experiment trying to target that exact group of people,I don't think it would be that hard. For all we know,if another No More Heroes was released on the 360/PS3,it might help prove his experiment even further.

I think it was more a satire/parody of the hardcore gamer imagination than a social experiment directed at them. After all, since when are lawn-mowing and kitty-rescuing minigames considered to be prime bait for FPS fans? Lots of them wouldn't be in on the joke, or just plain not interested in looking for it.

I was for the game until it said it would involve the players doing buddhist mantras with the Wii controller. I'm not for that.livinitup01

I like how this game is dividing people. Wiimote'd Buddhist mantras is a big reason why I'm personally drooling for this game. Different strokes, of course, but I'm so happy to see a serious adventure game not involving zapping aliens, zombies, or soldiers.

IGN has a new feature/interview up.

"Cursed Mountain is the first game that combines the elements of mountaineering, Buddhism, and horror."

That statement is music to my ears. Personally, I can't wait for this. Too bad about the September 09 release.

With Cursed Mountain and Fatal Frame IV (Hopefully?), it's going to be a great 2009 for Wii Horror.

Is it even possible to have any original concept for a WWII shooter.

Head_of_games

Yes, I can think of many ways to make an original WWII shooter. How about a stealth-based WWII shooter where you play a spy. Is stealth-based spy new to FPS? No. New to WWII shooters? Yes. How about a WWII game that focuses on the occult? Put the character (squad?) in forest haunted by the dead that have been raised - zombies, vampires, ghosts, etc. You could even be a special team sent in to deal with the problem so the allied forces can advance. Or you could go the other route, you could be a supernatural being. A werewolf could have interesting gameplay with day missions being more standard WWII fare and night missions where you tear your enemies asunder. It would also answer the question as to why health regenerates in the game. It'd also make for some fantastic unique events where you could be left for dead, regenerate, and your own squad (who saw your dead body) fears you. It could also provide a new take on multiplayer where you have a werewolf vs. a team of German soldiers. And that is just the tip of the iceberg for making an "original concept" WWII shooter.

Very nice. I wonder why everyone just makes you a normal soldier going through all the famous battles. If you can come up with three good ideas off the top of your head, why can't devs do it when they are paid to?

It's probably not because developers DON'T think about ideas like this, it's because they can't get their marketing teams and higher-up executives on board with it. New ideas are always risky, and while sometimes they pay off in big, big ways, from a risk perspective you're probably better off going with the well-treaded path. Incidentally, isn't the Wolfenstein series WWII-occult themed?

My problem with the Conduit's art direction is that I don't think a big Wii release can afford to be generic. With Killzone, GoW, etc on more powerful systems, why play a generic soldiers-and-aliens game on the Wii when you can get prettier generic soldiers-and-aliens elsewhere? Sure, there are the interesting weapons, but not sure if that's enough of a selling point. So far Wii has used unique art direction to its advantage (NMH, Madworld), and I think it should continue down that road. Surprise us with something new.

I may be nearly alone on this one, but I think a Killer7 wiimake would be amazing. As a rail shooter (of sorts) it would be perfect for the wiimote, and could instantly clean up the control scheme of the GC version. The mature storyline and the emphasis of plot over strict gameplay might make it a draw for "casual" wii owners interested in, say, avant-garde movies. Add in extra content and a lower retail price, and it would be an embarrassment of riches.
