Hey Everyone. My name is Drgnfiv and this is my very first blog on GameSpot. I guess I'll talk a little bit about myself. I actually started gaming somewhat late in my life with the Pokemon Series (Pokemon Yellow to be exact). However, it was through Pokemon that I was able to discover one of the greatest game series in my life, Super Smash Bros, and eventually Nintendo. My cousin introduced me to SSB64 and I had no idea who any of the characters were except for Pikachu. However, thanks to the Pokemon representation, I began playing the game. In time, I researched the other characters and as a result, I was able to introduce myself to the entire realm of Nintendo. So yes, I am a Nintendo fan, but I really don't mind playing games from other companies.
[Spoilers Ahead]
In addition to giving my salutations, I would like to address the newest Brawl update that we've received from the Super Smash Bros. Dojo. As some of you may or may not know, this official Smash Bros. site releases a piece of information about the newest installment in the Super Smash Bros. Series, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, every day. For Wednesday's update, we finally received a new character announcement after a time span of over two months. This character was Pikmin and Olimar. If you have ever played the Pikmin series, you will know who these characters are. In the first Pikmin game, an alien named Captain Olimar crash lands on a strange planet after a collision with a comet. Unfortunately, he only has a thirty day before his life support system will stop working. Fortunately for him, he is able to meet the Pikmin which are strange creatures which become strangely attached to him. He enlists their help and is able to return home. In SSBB, we are told that the Pikmin are vital to Olimar. In order to use Smash Attacks, certain Aerial Attacks, and even some grabs, Olimar needs Pikmin.
Well, in today's (Friday's) update, we found out how he is going to get the Pikmin. Today, we received the Special (B) Moves of this new character. His Neutral B move is "Pikmin Pluck". Using this move, Olimar is able to dig up Pikmin (up to 6) to help him out. The Pikmin colors in this game are Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple, and White. Each Pikmin has its own unique properties. His Side B move is "Pikmin Throw" where Olimar throws the Pikmin. They would be able to latch onto the opponent and do damage. It is unknown whether you must hit the opponent with the Pikmin in order for them to latch onto the opponent or if you can just throw them and they will go to the opponent themselves. I'm leaning toward the former of these because of his next Special move, the Down B. His Down B is his whistle and it is called "Pikmin Order". Using this attack, you can call back Pikmin that have separated from you or you can change the order of the Pikmin you can throw. His last Special move is his Up B, the "Pikmin Chain". This is another tether recovery move in which you use the Pikmin you have to use a chain to grab onto the ledge. The recovery length is based on the number of Pikmin you have.
[Opinions]
I'm really excited for this character. This is really different from the norm. It's kinda like the Ice Climbers (two characters together) and Zelda/Sheik (two characters in one) in SSBM. (I'm not really trying to make a comparison to IC and Zelda/Sheik with the two character thing. I'm making a comparison more on the originality.) His Special attacks do play homage to the Pikmin series. My only quasi-complaint is with his Up B move. There are already other characters with tether recoveries like Zero Suit Samus and Ivysaur so I was hoping for something just a little more original. However, I do find it interesting how his distance is dependent on how many Pikmin you have. Would this affect his usability? Hopefully not, but I can imagine a character like Mario throwing Olimar off the stage and using his fireballs to kill of the Pikmin so he can't recover. Only time will tell whether he will be good enough to be usable in competitive play or if he will just be more of a fun character. I'm pretty sure that he will be usable since I'm sure Sakurai will make the characters as even as possible.
[Possible Questions]
There are still several things that we don't know about this character. For example, what will happen if he uses this on the ground? If Olimar is sent off the stage, would the Pikmin fly after him? Another question is what will happen to the Pikmin if a character such as Kirby or Dedede sucks Olimar or an opponent grabs Olimar? Lastly, what would happen if Kirby stole Olimar's "Pikmin Pluck" ability?
[Speculation]
Here are my speculations as to what would happen for the above questions. If Olimar uses his Up B on the ground, my guess is that he would just throw the Pikmin up to hit the opponent. That would be a great anti-air attack, but it would be sort of boring in my opinion. I'm hoping that something more creative would happen. For the next question, I'm guessing that the Pikmin would have to fly after Olimar since he needs them for his Up B attack. I'm not sure how this will be implemented though. For the question about Olimar getting grabbed, my assumption is that if there are Pikmin around if Olimar gets grabbed or something like that, the Pikmin would attack the opponent. That would be interesting since Olimar would have a nice defense against grabs and the like. For the last question, my guess is that Kirby would be able to pick out Pikmin, but he wouldn't be able to use them in Smash Attacks, Aerial Attacks, etc. The Pikmin he plucks would just run to the nearest opponent and start attacking them. If Sakurai did implement something where Kirby's attacks changed from Olimar, I would be pleasantly surprised. However, I'm not expecting that since it would probably take a lot more work and I see it as too much attention spent to one character (2 movesets in one character?). I guess you never know though.
Well, that does it for my first blog. Sorry for its unusually length, but I had fun typing it up. Tell me what you guys think. I'm not sure what I'll put for my next blog, but I'll figure it out. See you guys next time.:)
