My GBA is my best friend...

Vegas was fun. I really ended up playing Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga the whole trip. It's a great game for the GBA. It has to be one of the best I've played. I have yet to finish it but I actually want to and that in and of itself says a lot for the game. I just can't get into Kingdom Hearts.

It's pretty quiet on the gaming front. I started a game of Icewind Dale 2 on the PC. It's been fun so far. I'm still in chapter 1. The engine is outdated, but it's still fun. I've made a terrible party so I can see myself starting over pretty soon. This current party is handling things pretty well, but I can see them getting overwhelmed shortly. I made a halfling rogue of course, yet I neglected to give him the disable device skill so he could disarm traps. Not only did I do this from the start, but I didn't give it to him when he hit level 2. I'm an idiot.

Vegas

Not *so* much video game related, but I'm heading to Vegas this weekend for 5 days. This is the first real vacation the wife and I have had since our daughter was born. She'll be staying with Grandma and Grandpa for the duration of our trip. I used to get so stressed in airports and during travel in general. Then I had a child. I added an extra 100 pounds of extra crap to lug around to that stress. Now a trip to the airport without child is like a vacation in itself.

I think that'll keep me going for my 10 hours of flying and slight lay over on the way home. We'll be seeing a comedy improv show at Harrah's, the Fab Four (Beatles impersonators) one night, and the Titanic relic exhibit at the Bellagio one night. We were going to do Penn and Teller, but we wanted to keep one night open to do the Center Stage Restaurant downtown. the cost of Penn and Teller is slightly prohibitive as well. You have to REALLY want to see them and I guess we just didn't.

I plan on hitting the 30,000 square foot arcade at the MGM Grand pretty hard. I spent a limited amount of time there on my last trip. Basically long enough for my wife to snap a picture of me and 5 8-year olds playing a sit-down pod racer game. That game is incredibly fun.

I will get her on a DDR machine this trip. OH YES I WILL!

On Grass, Groundhogs, and Games.

It seems like I'm just adding more and more games to my Now Playing list without taking any off. IS THAT BAD?!?!?! Hahaha, maybe, maybe not. Who cares? You can't take the money with you when you die so you might as well spend it on something you enjoy right?

I've recently added Forza for the Xbox to the list. I've played all of the Gran Tourismo games in the past. Not to completion of course because well, that would take 800 YEARS! But I had fun with them. The main determining factor for buying Forza was the fact that a coworker was buying it and would be playing it on Live. We look for games that we can enjoy together over Live because they really are difficult for us to find. While my coworker is what I would call an avid gamer, he's not exactly a good avid gamer. We met up for a Halo 2 session once that consisted of me walking up behind him, placing sticky grenades on his neck and stepping back while he blew up. I had a great time, but he was really bad at the game. I tried to keep things low key as I am just not the kind of person to rag on someone because they are not good at a game. I don't think I gave him a hard time. It was just very obvious that we were not matched up well. Things should prove a bit different in Forza.

The meat of Forza is career mode and simulation not arcade racing. It's a thinking man's game if you will. At least in the online portion of the game, the more you know about tuning your car effectively, the better you should do. Combine strong tuning decisions, smart upgrade applications, and superior driving skills and you can become a real force to be reckoned with. Everyone on Live will know what cars are the fastest for each class and hopefully tuning will allow the smart competitors to excel.

In any case, maybe I'll do a full review later when I get to play more of the game. I don't want to get too involved in a journal entry. I did that in my first few entries and it became a bit of a daunting task to write. The game is fun and I'm really looking forward to spending more time on Live because at least two real-life friends own the game.

Time for gaming is at a real premium right now. We had the lawn seeded at our house Monday. Which means Matt is outside until 10 pm every night watering the lawn. You may not think 0.5 acres is a lot of land, but let me tell you it is when you have to water it every day. It's kind of nice in a way because spending that much time outside in my yard I've experienced a few minor things. I've talked to one of my neighbors a whole lot. I now know the fence in the back of my yard separating my yard from cows is electric (keep children away). I also know that there is a huge groundhog hole in the very back of my new yard. I'm conflicted over the last one because part of me thinks it would be neat to have a "pet" groundhog in the backyard and part of me wants to exterminate it. By exterminate I mean shoot in the head with a projectile made of lead. What would you do with a groundhog living in your backyard?

News on the gaming front.

Oh yeah! My journal!

Ahh, what's been happening on my gaming front lately?

There's been a major UT2K4 revival on my computer. The resurrection of one of my favorite UT servers has recently happened. Of course that means that I have to patch up my installation for the game, and download any and all maps the server may be using. With the vanilla UT2K4 revival also comes the longing to play all of the wonderful mods for that game, Alien Swarm, Air Buccaneers, Frag-Ops, Red Orchestra. UT2K4 is really the gift that keeps on giving, it's just a bear to update your installation between revivals. I've been a fan of the UT franchise since it's inception and will continue to support it until they REALLY screw it up. UT2K3 was a bit of a disappointment in the fact that was not much more than a graphical overhaul, but UT2K4 was worth every penny and then some. It's the only game I've ever pre-ordered, and a collector's edition tin at that.

My recent UT revival has also spurred the purchase of the newly released Unreal Championship 2 for the Xbox. The first UC is something I've never played. Mainly due to the fact that I've only had an Xbox for less than a year and it's never on anyone's "must own titles" list. I love UC2. I literally played it all weekend long. I must have put 10 hours into it so far which is a whole lot for me in two days. After reading some recent reviews about the game I thought I was in for a steep learning curve. I figured that while my 30 year old mind could wrap around just about anything, my main hangup would probably be my reflexes and reaction time. This is certainly the case for many other games I play these days. I started the single player on the easiest setting of Novice and advanced just fine. There were some challenging levels that I had to play through 3-5 times but nothing impossible so far. The game is challenging enough to be fun so far without being impossible so as to drive me away. I took this game for a spin on Live and was surprised to see that I can not only compete, but I win the majority of the time. It's crazy. I chalk it up to the fact that it's a brand new game and the 13 year olds don't have all their moves down yet. I expect to see my win ratio decrease over time, we'll see how it goes. It's not as convenient as Halo 2 online (parties, messaging to other games, clan rankings), but it's a fun game and I see myself playing it for a long time.

In other Xbox news: The Xbox has finally made it's way to the living room! My home network is up and running smoothly. Sure I have to compete for game time with the rest of the family and their TV time, but it's all worth it to play on the big TV with the stereo while comfortably reclined on the couch.

I picked up Katamari Damacy the other day based solely upon people's recommendations. It's a fun game and something I can see Katie picking up very soon.

Money flies out of my wallet

I don't know how I have disposable income right now, but I'm rolling in cheap games.

I picked up the well recommended Phantom Dust last night for a mere $20. Counterstrike and Return of the King for the Xbox came in a 2 for $25 deal from Best Buy online. I expect both of those to be fair at best. Counterstrike is Counterstrike and I only came to enjoy it about a year ago on the PC. It embodies both the best aspects of online PC gaming and the worst.

Phantom Dust is an amazingly fun game so far. I'm working through some of the single player so I can hope to compete online. The game is beautiful, original, challenging, and rewarding. If you enjoy head to head fighting games, and have ever found yourself either intrigued or outright addicted to collectible card games you MUST spend the $20 release price on this game.

I popped in CS last night for about 20 minutes. I played DS_Dust because it's really the only CS map I know. I played against the computer on the beginner difficulty. It was fun. CS is kind of like malt liquor. It's cheap, tastes like crap but it gets the job done.

Brothers in Arms

I went out and bought Brothers In Arms (BIA) last night on a whim. I knew that I wanted that or Republic Commando. BIA won out. I based my purchase on things I read. Smart? Maybe not, but I've bought worse games. I'm a sucker for military based games and have been having fun with Full Spectrum Warrior (FSW) lately. From everything I've read, BIA promises to give me the squad commanding power of FSW while still being able to aim and shoot a rifle from a first person perspective. Can't lose right?

I had about 30 minutes to devote to it last night. After Katie went to bed, I hooked up the headphones to the TV and went after it. BIA is pretty heavy on story which can be good. I personally am finding myself a bit worn out on the WW2 European theater however. It's popular for game developers because really, who makes a better enemy than Nazi's? I'm willing to purchase another game based on WW2 if it delivers on gameplay though.

I started on the easiest difficulty setting as I do with most games straight out of the box. This allows me to complete as much of the game as possible before something new catches my eye and I devote no more time to the original game. I've completed two chapters. The game is easy so far. Easy as in if you can't shoot a Nazi, feel free to walk up to him, fumble with your buttons until you find the one assigned to melee attack and then pop him in the face with your rifle butt. That's OK for right now. I'm sure it will get harder, and if I remember correctly there's two more difficulty settings.

The game attempts to come off as being "epic". I started the game and immediately found myself entrenched with a few squadmates. I had a Garand at my disposal which is sufficient enough for killing Nazi's. I brought it up to my shoulder and started finding enemies using my iron sights. I'm a BIG fan of iron sights in games. It adds a sense of realism that is not present when a game uses crosshairs. The only problem is you need to know how the Developers use iron sights. That is what's my sight picture supposed to look like? Is the target supposed to be on top of the front sight or do I cover it? I would burn through close to a full clip (I think it's 7 or 8 shots) with the Garand before I saw an enemy fall. In any case, it wasn't long before a tank rolled in and took out my entire trench. Credits rolled and the intro title screen to the game started. Great. I've been dropped immediately into action with no idea what I'm doing in an attempt to raise my blood pressure and SUCK ME INTO THE GAME! The WW2 atmosphere is to overused for that to be affective anymore. You want to suck me in? Do something new please.

After the intro to the game is finished, it goes to a cut scene of you in a plane, about to jump on D-Day. This is OK, but again, I've seen Band of Brothers a million times now. and while I welcome games that try to emulate the feel of the series, I don't take well to games that completely rip it off and follow it almost to the letter. I mean who cares if your plane is on fire, YOU DO NOT JUMP UNTIL YOU SEE THE GREEN LIGHT SOLDIER! The use of the F-word was a little bit overdone in this section as well. I generally take well to appropriate swearing in a game, but already this is getting to be a little to much. The cutscene continues to your parachute landing. It was alright, it was kind of neat seeing flak around you, and planes going down etc.

So, I've landed without my unit. I didn't see that coming. Ok, ok, I did see that coming. What I really didn't see coming was the fact that I would land with absolutely no weapon! Haha, yeah that's right, no weapon and no friendlies in sight. This might get interesting after all! I'm not above throwing my helmet at a Nazi ala Tom Sizemore as Sergeant Mike Horvath in Saving Private Ryan. That would in fact be cool and an homage to something WW2 related besides Band of Brothers. But no, I scurry down a dirt road following my HUD objective indicator to meet up with another guy with no enemies in sight. My partner now informs me that I need a weapon so he throws me his .45. Ugh, not exactly what I was hoping for in an iron sights only game, but at least it's something.

The first enemy encounter I had with my new .45 introduced the first glimpse at how squad tactics are handled in the game. It's actually pretty neat and I look froward to exploring it further. Basically by hitting the BACK button on your controller you pause the game. It gives you an isometric view of the battlefield and you are allowed to focus your view on different elements. Battlefield elements such as each of your squadmates, enemies, and location of your orders are selectable. I was ordered to find cover behind a stone fence and provide covering fire against two Germans while my squad leader flanked them and took them out. This was pretty neat except for the fact that I still only had a .45 and felt relatively helpless. Covering fire with a handgun means a lot of burning through ammo and not killing anything. I don't like that. Regardless, this was about being an Indian and not a Chief, so when ordered to provide covering fire, I'll fling lead and reload like nobody's business. The enemy was flanked and subsequently slaughtered. Meh, it's training I guess, but I like to do the killing.

Next up, my unit received an order to take out a couple of AA guns. This mission went along alright except I really didn't know what I was supposed to be doing. I used my pistol to attempt to suppress the enemy behind a wall and eventually just took to flanking them myself and killing them. I'm not sure if I missed an order here or not. In either case, I was running really low on ammo. The interface for placing a satchel charge on the AA gun was standard fair. Press a button, and a mini cutscene loads showing you fondling a bag from over your shoulder. At this point a timer starts and you need to find some cover. Our next AA gun had a bit of a surprise in store for me. Again, it was manned by three or four Germans. I quickly ran out of pistol ammo and started pursuing other options for a weapon. I ran up to my squadmates hoping there was perhaps an option to take their weapon, since they were ineffective at killing things at this point, but that didn't seem to be an option. Now I had also ran up to bodies we had previously killed in order to take a weapon, but none were found. Now I was stuck. So, I ran up to an enemy and pistol whipped the living hell out of him until he died. He took some health out of me as well, but oh baby was it worth it to finally get my hands on a KAR 98. :)

I gave the game a couple of hours last night with a slight Halo 2 break in the middle. The single player is more of the same, move unit to engage, suppressing fire, flank, kill. I stopped at a section against an MG42 that is giving me particular troubles. I have yet to figure out a way to flank it. I'm sure there's a hole in a building somewhere I just haven't found. I've been given access to grenades. They're OK, but it seems like you have one option as to how far to throw them. I see no difference in the length of my throw based upon where I'm looking. I've also noted a distinct lack of the sound of the Garand clip ejecting. I pointed this out on a message board where one of the Developers posts, and he said that the sound is there but it has just been toned down a lot. And that most likely you wouldn't even hear it in a heavy firefight. I'm sure he's right, but I want it louder.

I tried multiplayer briefly last night. I optimatched into some games and got stuck spectating until the game was over. Not fun. I bounced around and never found a game starting. I also started my own game, and waited for 10 minutes and no one joined. A failed attempt at multiplayer indeed. Halo 2 has spoiled the Xbox live aspect of every game out there.

I am really starting to feel an addiction to this game. Long has it been since a single player campaign has kept me up at night just trying to get a little bit further. JUST TO THE NEXT SAVE POINT! I'm tired. I'm all but falling asleep at work. I still haven't played any multiplayer. I am however scheduled to explore multiplayer with some Geezers tonight.

As soon as I started the tank missions I was hooked. Controlling the tank as a unit, then an infantry unit becomes very frantic, and very exciting. This game is awesome and being only about half-way through the easiest campaign I feel it was more than worth the money. It's hard even on the easiest setting. I'm not sure how I'll survive the other three difficuties.

I'll update with some multiplayer impressions tomorrow.

3-12-05

I played multiplayer for about an hour and half with some Geezers (www.geezergamers.com) on Thursday. A great time was had by all. The multiplayer aspect of this game is very good, but it's not what I would call great. We had a total of four people playing and switched it up between playing axis and allies 2vs2 stylez. We ended up trying three different maps/game types.

The maps themselves are not as open or as big as I expected. Of course, the last WW2 game I've played is the Red Orchestra mod for UT2K4 (http://www.redorchestra.clanservers.com/). I really don't even know how big the maps in RO are, but the bottom line is they FEEL big. When I hit the edge of map in that game, I am out in the middle of nowhere far from the action. In BIA you go what feels like 25 feet scaled in either direction and your at the map edge. I felt cramped. 2 out of the three maps I played felt like they were about 50 feet wide by 500 feet long. The game types seem to warrant this map style (get from point A to point B without getting shot).

Communication is key in the four player game. You command a squad or 3 men, and your partner controls a squad of three men. The voice communication kept breaking up and echoing. It was unreliable at best, and for the most part un-useable. There is no host migration like in Halo 2. Our host told me he was on an 1856/384 DSL line. I don't know how much this bandwidth played into the voice communication problems. I didn't notice any lag really. I can't say I missed shots or got killed because of lag. I also received a dirty disc error which caused me to drop from the game, reboot my Xbox and reconnect. I have NEVER received that error in any other game.

I won't go into the specifics of gametypes here but they were very fun. The defensive team always seems to hold an advantage simply because they are on the defensive. I think that's realistic and I liked it. It was very frustrating to play Allies, but switching to the Axis team provided a completely different gameplay style which was nice.

Overall, I think if you have a good group of people to play with online it can be very fun. I would like to see a patch for some of the voice issues.

Online Game Renting

So I signed up for an online game rental service. www.gamerang.com. I have to do it. There are so many games out there that I want and I just can't spend the money on all of them. Plus, I've come to the realization that I own a BUNCH of games that I have not finished, and some that I've barely touched, yet I paid full price for them (and by full price I normally mean $20 after they go "greatest hits"). I chose this service based almost solely on the fact that they have multiple distribution centers and we can get games back and forth quickly through the mail. I'm currently taking advantage of their 10-day free trial which will carry over into a subscription of $14.95 per month charged to my credit card. That's for one game at a time. A little steep? Maybe. My current rental joint of choice lets me keep a game for 7 days at $3.99. Sure, if I take 4 games a month from Gamerang, it's a better deal. I see myself taking 2-3 though. It's still probably better due to the fact that I can keep them as long as I want and I don't have to make any special trips to the rental place.

My current queue is as follows:

Battlestar Galactica

Star Wars: Republic Commando

Brothers in Arms

Mercenaries

Chronicles of Riddick.

Now that I'm not working and weekday evenings I figured that would free up some gametime. If it doesn't, this service is out the window as any games I want to play for an extended period or have great multiplayer capabilities I will be outright buying anyway.

2-28-05 9:59 PM

BSG has apparently been mailed out.

3-3-05 3:00 PM

I'm hoping to have my game when I get home. I WAS hoping that it would take less than 3 days to get to me. I don't know where I really got that idea, perhaps it's because Gamerang has a distribution center in Jersey. So, if I do one game a week, with a 6 day turn around time for each game, that's like what, a 24 day span without a game each month?!?! THAT DOG AIN'T GONE HUNT! Of course, that's assuming that I only keep a game for a week and not longer. We'll see. I'm still on my 10-day trial. I probably have to have the two game package at $19.95 a month. That way I can do multiple systems too.

3-4-05 3:28 PM

I didn't get my game yesterday. It's not like I had time to play anyway, but it still sucks.

3-6-05 7:00 am

I received the game yesterday. A bit disapointing in light of the fact that the very mailer it came in advertised a 1-3 day turn around. The mailer it came in was one step short of destroyed so maybe the Pony Express boy that carried it from their distribution center in New Jersey to my house in Maryland ran into some Indian opposition along the way. I can excuse that. I've sent an email to their support box to let them know that it took longer than expected.

3-8-05

I sent an email to their support asking about the delivery times. See below:

*snip*

I recently signed up for a 10-day trial. I was surpirsed to find that
the first game in my que was shipped on 2-28, but arrived at my
residence on 3-5. At a 5 day turn around time I can't even mail it
back immediately and hope to have it there under my 10 day trial. Let
alone have a chance to play the rented game. I can hardly recommend
the 10 day trial to others if that's the normal way it works.

I was a bit dissapointed when the actual advertisement on the mailer
stated a 1-3 day time for receiving a game. One of the main reasons I
decided to try Gamerang is becuase other companies have such slow turn
around times. I can handle a 5-day delivery time, in fact it almost
prompts me to upgrade to the 19.95/month package just so I always have
a game out. But when the advertising states 1-3 days, that's what I
expect.

Is 5 days what I can expect on a regular basis or is there something
that went wrong because it was a new account or my first rented game?

*snip*

Hello,

Sory for the mail delay. Gamerang uses the U.S. Postal Service to ship games to
our members. We've found this method of delivery to be reliable and fast.
However, once in a while mail delays may occur which are beyond our control.

Please feel free to contact us with any other information.

I sort of expected an offer to extend my trial. I sent BSG back today. I'll be interested to see how fast it gets there. I'm sticking with this for a month. Their distribution center is in Englewood NJ, and I'm in Hagerstown MD. 250 miles according to MapQuest.

3-9-05

Forget this noise. I cancelled my account. This isn't going to curb me from buying games and it's a waste of money for me in the long run. I know what games I want to buy, and before Gamerang can get them to me I've already read about them enough to make up my mind as to whether I want to own them or not.

I read about the game, add it to my rental queue, then within a day I'm already checking prices online. Not good. Most games I buy are greatest hits so I'm just going to shell out the $20 for it anyway and scrap renting it.
