Ice Climbers: Final Smash

The Ice Climbers' Final Smash is Iceberg!
Calling it Iceberg is a bit problematic. I mean, it's not like...
Ahh! I guess Iceberg IS about all you can call this!
When you get the Smash Ball and do your move...
The duo does a high-five, and...
CRRRRRSSSSSSHHHHH!
It happens even in the big city, just like this...
Ice doesn't just make the available ledges smaller and more slippery, but it also damages your opponents!
But, of course, the Ice Climbers can handle it no problem. They look as cool and refreshed as ever.
Sometimes, you can even freeze opponents.
Now that's just cold!

It has been quite a while since the last update...

Spectator

Even among Smash players, there are some people who just aren't that good at action games. With that in mind, I've been thinking about how I can convey the fun of Smash to newcomers. I've been thinking about this type of thing since long before I joined this industry.
So, for this game, I've prepared a new kind of mode. It's called Spectator, and you'll find it in the With Anyone menu. If I had to describe it in a word, it's "watching!"
You can enjoy watching matches between other people!
This mode is a service where Nintendo uses Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to send the data for games played between other people to every Smash household.
Match selection is handled automatically, and absolutely no names of any players can be seen. It feels like there's a continuous broadcast of matches on your television! Even if you don't play, you can enjoy the battles of other characters!
And at the beginning of each match, you can even bet coins on the character you think will win.
I'll bet some coins. I've got a winner!
Glean what hints you can from the stages and combatants and try to deduce the winner.
Of course, if your pick wins, your coin count will increase! And the more players in a match, the higher the payout. There may even be extra prizes.
Even if you lose, you can get some stickers.
Just to make sure there's no mistaking that just watching a match can be fun, we'll be passing out stickers left and right.
For those of you who want to cooperate with our data collection for Spectator mode, set Allow Spectators to Yes in your Wi-Fi Options. This will result in your play data occasionally being sent to Nintendo.
This setting is in your Wi-Fi Options.
The content that is broadcast is the same for everyone spectating (if your connection timing is the same), so it should be fun to have people in different environments watch and cheer the same match.
To be shocked by impressive play, or to bust a gut laughing at some accident will be quite fun! Perhaps you can use it as reference for your own matches.
Hopefully this mode is something that even people who aren't good at games can enjoy.

Meta Knight: Special Moves

I introduced some of Meta Knight's special moves in a previous post titled "Four Special Move Types".
But, since he has so many peculiar moves, I wanted to explain them again.
Suck them up!
Your inertia carries you left and right. Tap the button to rise up off the ground a bit.
Rush!!!
You spin like a drill, plowing into people. You can also change your direction slightly.
Push your enemies up into the air!
Of course, you can push them down, too.
Rise up while launching your sword up...
You can also flutter through the air and glide.
This is a move you use to glide. It's kind of like Kirby's wing ability.
The familiar move from the trailer.
He wraps himself in his cape, disappears, and reappears with this move.
Tilt the stick to move the position where he'll reappear!
If you're pressing the attack button, you'll unleash a surprise attack as you reappear!
Use the Dimensional Cape as a precursor to an attack. If you just can't get the opportunity, then forget about attacking.

Kirby: Meta Knight's Revenge

"Kirby: Meta Knight's Revenge" (1:22)
Composition Supervisor: Jun Ishikawa
Arrangement Supervisor: Noriyuki Iwadare
I was just thinking how it's been more than ten years since I made this game...
It was in Kirby Super Star that Meta Knight rode out on the Battleship Halberd to govern Dream Land. This is a jazz arrangement of the music from back then.
WELL? How do you like it?!
After going with the "serious touch" of the Halberd for the Kirby stage, I'm now thinking that maybe this overly peppy song is a little incongruous...

Handicap

Be kind to beginners! If all you do in brawls is beat up people who don't know left from right, they'll never understand the rules of the game, right?
So until now, I've always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series.
But, I began to think that there isn't much thrill in just making yourself weaker, so I changed the system.
First, find the Handicap option on the Rules screen.
Then you'll see something new.
Click-click-click! Ratchet up the handicap.
You start with your initial damage meter boosted!
Even when you reappear.
The strength of each character doesn't change, so then you can show your skills to your opponent!
Also, you can use this not only for handicapping, but also for starting all players at the same damage-it'll give you matches with a slightly different feel.
Now, I've also kept the auto-handicap feature. This gradually increases the starting damage for the winner of the match.
Choose the Auto setting from the same option.
Thanks. To view song go to http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/music/music14.html.

Whoa... this is a cool college football halftime show...

Gray Fox

If Snake is going to be joining the brawl, then it should be fine to have someone else from the Metal Gear world join as an Assist Trophy, right?
Frank Jaeger, the Gray Fox, appears!
Oh! Cool mono-eye!
He approaches stealthily with lithe jumps, coming right in then slicing repeatedly. Awww! It makes you want to use him as a playable character.
He slices over and over with his back-handed grip.
By the way, he reflects projectiles.
PA-SHEEN!
Gray Fox faces off with Snake.
Gray Fox, who engaged in a grand battle to the death with Metal Gear REX... To think that he would reappear on Wii, and alongside Mario and Sonic at that!
You never know what might happen in this world.

Grab and Throw

Surely you've learned how to shield to protect yourself. Have you learned that yet? Good. You've learned.
Then next up is grabbing. And throwing!
Press the attack button while shielding...
And grab at your opponent!
If you press the attack button while shielding, you'll grab. Give a try next time you're shielding.
Block your enemy's attack with your shield!
Then just press the attack button to grab your enemy!
Tilt the Control Stick in any direction you like to throw!
Then pursue with combo attacks!
And so on.
Grabs are also effective against enemies that are protecting themselves with their own shields. Shield against attacks, then grab. Or dodge. If you can understand this flow, you'll find they add a dimension that changes the simple charging attack.
At any rate, get in the habit of shielding when you're in trouble. Then you can think about what comes next.

Items from Previous Installments

A number of items from past Smash games appear in this one as well. But, of course, there are naturally many people who have never played any of those games. And even if you have, I still think I ought to explain these.
It's not all of them, but I would like to introduce a few.
It is a blade of light-the Beam Sword.
This time it gets REALLY long!
Hold down the button to release a fire burst!
Throw it at someone to freeze them.
Do a side-smash to hit a home run!
This time, everyone has a different stance.
Items pour out from inside.
When you get the mushroom...
You become gigantic!
These are just some of the items that intensify the slapstick nature of this game. You must master them all!

Fox's Misfortune

The Arwing makes an emergency landing on the edge of a dense jungle.
As Diddy Kong discovers it, and evil hand reaches for him from the lake...

Fire Emblem: Fire Emblem Theme

"Fire Emblem: Fire Emblem Theme" (1:15)
We're using an extravagant chorus with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl main theme, right? Well, when we recorded it, we also created and recorded the Fire Emblem theme with the same members.
In Japan, the lyrics used in commercials are quite famous ("♪If danger approaches, retreat helter-skelter!"), but in taking it worldwide, I've reflected on the Fire Emblem world and done the lyrics in Latin.
If you were to write them in English, they would go something like this:
Fire Emblem, companions walk
The endless path together.
In the wavering shadow of spite,
Our home is faced by the oncoming spear,
Engulfed in flames.
I keep that unforgettable day in my heart
And now rise up together with my companions.
Fire Emblem, our bond shall be never broken.
We hold fast to protect tomorrow
And the one who awaits our return.
Fire Emblem, light gathers on the flag we unfurl.
Fire Emblem, we gaze upon the multitude of stars,
Gripping our blades.
If we do not bring light to the darkness in these lands,
The shooting stars will soar over a wasteland.
Fire Emblem, on whom does the morning sun shine
As she climbs over the edge of battle?

The Summit

The summit? The summit of what? If you must know, I suppose it's the summit of Icicle Mountain. And I guess there are vegetables there after all.
In other words, it's an Ice Climber stage.
At first glance, it appears to be a normal glacial peak. But after you fight for a while...
A pop! A crack! It's breaking?!
Th-the terrain is sliding downhill!
It's finally arrived at the sea. And with a splash, too!
Hmm. Talk about hectic. And rumor has it, you can't get careless once you've reached the sea.
The polar bear is pushing the iceberg deeper!
A fish leaps out of the water!
I feel like I've seen that fish before somewhere... Where could it have been?

****c

This is the ****c single-player mode-hence the name, ****c.
In this mode, you try to clear each stage as you go.
Choose your favorite character and a difficulty level, then start the match!
Fight whoever appears!
The world you fight in is pretty much determined based on stage number. Stage 1 is based on The Legend of Zelda. Stage 3 is based on Pokémon. And each time, the characters are chosen randomly.
You'll also find the status of enemies and rules of the match vary slightly to include things like Giant matches, Metal matches, and Team battles.
Heart icons indicate your allies.
You cleared the stage!
So... You just keep playing until you reach the end. Easy to understand, right?
Huh? You're wondering what the coins on the Stage Clear screen are for? Um, you think they're there to make it look more lively?
No, no. You earn and save these up little by little as you play. And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no-you don't use them to shop.

Oct. 29 Mon. 2007
Stage Builder

You can create your own stages this time?! No way. REALLY?! With a feature like that, won't I be able to play this game forever?!
Apparently it's true...!!!
Those who enjoy a little effort may be able to enjoy this stage builder for the rest of their lives.
First, start from the initialize setting.
You start by choosing the size of the stage, the background pattern, and the music that will play. Oops! Sorry. For music, you'll only be able to choose from the songs you have available.
This is the edit screen!
Basically, you choose parts from the palette on the side and place them in the field.
The controls vary by controller, but each one can do the following:
- Flip parts left to right
- Enlarge or shrink parts
- Zoom in or out on the screen
- Swap palettes
- Erase
Just place terrain however you like. Chuckity-chuckity-CHUCK!
Then try it out!
Modify it and try it... Repeat as necessary. Make your own ideal stage!
Mmm... That's amazing.
And you can save a name and a comment for the stage.
You can change the music on the save screen. Choose something that matches the mood of your stage.
And I'm happy that this is compatible with SD cards. You don't have to worry about size, so make as many stages as you like.
Also, if you've finished registering someone as both a Wii Friend and a Smash friend, you'll be able to send custom stages to each other.
Now, for those who hate putting effort into such things, we've also prepared something you can enjoy as well.
"Submit" ...?
That's right! You can use your Wi-Fi connection to send stages you've made to Nintendo! (However, you can't submit repeatedly. Maybe just once per day?)
And a stage selected from the entire daily collection will be sent from Nintendo to your Wii. A stage made by someone else will come to you over the Internet once per day!
DUN DUN DUNNNNNN! That's the shocking truth. This means you'll be able to experience a new stage every day-the flavor of the day, if you will. However, the plan is for that stage to vanish once one day has passed. It's a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
You can submit in both the Snapshots mode and the Stage Builder mode, allowing everyone to enjoy the creations of others. The fun of sharing is one of the ways that I wanted to take advantage of Wi-Fi for something other than pure battling.
Today's stage has lots of traps...
This is our ideal current plan. We still don't know the exact service period. And future tuning may result in changes to the spec.
But for now, please look forward to it!

King Dedede's Special Moves

King Dedede: Special Moves

Look! That's a serious jump!
And he lands HARD!
King Dedede's great jump is his specialty! But he doesn't have much freedom while jumping, and his vulnerability when he lands is pretty significant.
That said, if things look bad, just tap down on the Control Stick.
You can flip over and cancel it in midair.
However, if you try to cancel just before landing, you'll make a fool of yourself, and you'll be vulnerable for even longer, so watch out.
Just toss them out there.
He pulls out Waddle Dees from who knows where and throws them. The Waddle Dees then waddle around afterward.
Occasionally a Waddle Doo appears...
And Gordo, too.
This time, King Dedede's hammer is actually mechanized. The head's rotation is powered by a motor.
And it can do this.
Whoa! What is this?!?
If you hold down the Control Stick and the special-move button simultaneously, you can charge up his hammer. And you can unleash it in one blow!
The power of the jet multiplies the destructive force!
You can even walk around with it charged up, but you can't save the charge by pressing the shield button. Also, if you charge it up too much, it will increase your own damage, so be careful.
