Ok, here is my take on the topic: (I see this will be tldr; sorry!)
1. A major culprit of moral/ethical issues: bipolarity, or bipolar thinking.
Many of us are stuck in opposing definition pairs like something/nothing, or Me/Them.
It could be so much easier to clarify these things if a small word "absolute" would be
used as a prefix. See what happen then, is there truly absolute nothing?
Even the smallest amount of something for the smallest amount of time is
eternally bigger then absolute nothing, so how could there be absolute nothing?
There is only absolute something. Equally, none of us are ever truly consisting only
absolute "me", all of us are inherent derivations of our parents and ancestors,
we are equally creations of the society and all the external information that
we gained during our life. There is no such thing as an absolute, segregated
entity as "me".
2. The problem of opposites
There are several works in philosophy covering the problem of languages
and the meaning of words in regards of our thinking and our ability to form abstractions
that workable representations of reality. (Cognitivebehavior.com, 2006)
I believe one of the major problems is our lazy way of phrasing when we think or talk about the so called opposite pairs.
There are a few categories of these "opposites" and none of them proves to be truly opposites under scrutiny.
(The names of these categories were invented by me)
-Layers
These are the ones that have never seemed to be opposites to me, but a quick Google shows that many people do see them as such. (See Dualism)
Examples:
energy+matter (=universe) (the existence of God is not questioned here, nor confirmed), inorganic+organic matter (=basics life),
organic matter+instincts (=higher lifeforms), instincts+thoughts (= thinking animals),
instincts confirmed by responsible thought over time (= emotions, humans)
First of all matter is MADE OF energy. (Fernflores, 2010)
Secondly, how can one not see that organic matter is MADE OF inorganic matter, how can they be opposites?
Just like instincts are inseparable reflections of what the body needs, instincts again MADE OF the needs of the organic body. (preservation)
Well cognitive thought is just like the same, there is no thought if it weren't initiated by some sort of instinctual need in the first place.
And there wouldn't be any emotion, if analytical thought couldn't confirm
the worthiness of a particular instinct over a long period of time, to become elevated to the position of valuable emotion.
(Of course, our cognitive thinking is (or should be) our tool to restrain those instincts which validity is not confirmed over time.)
Unfortunately many of us, mistakenly categorize uncontrolled feelings as emotions,
but in reality uncontrolled feelings are instincts or could be simply referred to as hysteria.
All these layers are nicely built upon (and actually being made of) each other.
-Complementers
These are the ones, that look like as opposites when they are taken out of context,
such as river+river bank. If this pair is observed in a larger geographical context,
it is easy to see why they are complementers and not opposites.
Such as the case with the Taoist notion of a room and the space (or nothing) enclosed by the room.
Someone who doesn't see in that case the "nothing" is in fact 'reserved space' allocated by
the boundaries of the room, can be easily led to think that nothing is actually something.
The room and the reserved space are complementers of each other, and not opposites.
Group+individual (it is not worth to live in a group that has lost the various uniqueness of its individuals,
but the individuals also benefit on many levels from organizing themselves into groups,
therefore the society and individualism are both equally important,
because only when both of them are equally accepted as 'important and vital things' will be given
the most benefit to everyone on the most level) (see Personal Liberty)
The ultimate complementer pair is of course individual+whole humanity,
which pair in turn can be complementer of the individual+small group relationship,
and are both similarly valuable pairs, and the "single group"+"all groups"
pair has a similar complementing and equal value relationship, but on a different layer.
Also, "all groups" is with other words "all humanity".
-Things that are only opposites from a relative point of view
Positive and negative temperatures are only opposites when we use a measure system that
places the zero to a higher temperature than absolute zero.
In reality there is no such thing as negative temperature, instead there is absolute zero (but even that
doesn't actually exist) and then going upwards direction forever. (Gilman, 2010)
It is the same thing with electricity, there is various amount of electric flow which starts from the state of no relevant amount,
in reality there is no such thing as positive or negative, that depends on relative point of view in this case too.
(With a bit of stretch, these could also be heat vs 'less heat' and electricity vs 'less electricity'
which places these examples to the next group as well.)
-Partial clone
These are 2 of the same things, but one of them has missing element(s), or it doesn't exist entirely, apart from human imagination, although it can manifest through willful human actions.
Such as the case with good and bad where close observation will show us that every bad person
thinks they do good, if nothing else then they do good to themselves.
Therefore this opposite pair is in reality good versus unbalanced good.
Unbalanced good comes from lack of knowledge, or in a cemented way of doing things that originate from lack of knowledge.
(The "road to hell is paved with good intentions", is a typical case of being stuck in a repetitive situational exercise, and doing the same stupid thing over and again. To avoid doing 'bad things with truly good intentions' (ie unbalanced knowledge) is possible by gaining experience, see Point 3 and 4 later.)
Similar case with creation versus destruction, which is in reality creation versus unbalanced creation.
Every creation does some destruction, when the sculpture is being made,
the parts that not needed to consist the shape are "destroyed". But then again only 2 options? Bipolar thinking anyone?
So what happens with the bits that were chiseled away? Lets think it that way:
Those bits would perfectly define the boundaries of the sculpture if they were put together again.
But what defines the shape of the sculpture now, once the unnecessary bits are removed?
Well, the entire actual universe defines the shape of the sculpture (just like in the case of every other shapes).
And similarly what defines the shape of the entire universe? The shape of the sculpture defines it (just like the shape of everything else does).
If the sculpture would be destroyed, then the shape of the entire universe would change, because the part of the Universe outside the sculpture, wouldn't be defined by the shape of the sculpture anymore. (But that past state of relation still would forever remain ingrained on the time line.)
Creation is in a complementer relation with that above mentioned kind of destruction counterpart. With other words they are Yin and Yang.
Now the mythical 'Destruction' is an entirely different story. All 'Destruction' has some creation value, as it is nothing but unbalanced creation.
Just like creation, all 'unbalanced creation' is purposeful, but it is pointing to the same direction as striving for absolute nothing, which is pointless.
On the long run it would destroy all participants long before they could achieve even 'almost' absolute nothing. (This is in contrast with 'almost perfect' that could be achieved See point 6.)
Now contrary to popular belief, 'Destruction' (ie unbalanced creation) is not part of Yin and Yang.
If it existed, (apart from the imagination of humans), then it would be actively against Yin and Yang. In reality it is only possible for it to exist by the actions of humans.
Natural forces that seemingly promote 'Destruction' are part of Yin and Yang, because in fact they are just random forces, waiting for a driving purpose,
that could channel them to become parts of the whole from human perspective as well.
They are like empty space, waiting for a home that would help them to become 'reserved space' that is ready for utilization.
Or simply humans could realize that they should just get out of the way of natural disasters?
This leads us to
3. One time vs. long term
Nearly all paradoxes and situational exercises can be solved with one simple fact to take into account: they ARE situational.
Normally they do not take into account one or more important part of broader reality and that is more often than not the time factor.
An arrow that never reaches you, because its distance from you can be forever halved at any given time? Notice the 'given time'?
The example is situational, not taking into account the time factor.
Unstoppable force and unmovable object in the same universe? They can exist at different times.
And so on and so on.
It is always helpful to see the long term context, and not just the current situation.
This leads us to
4. General vs. special circumstances
It is important to see why we need two sets of morals.
During peace killing is NOT OK. In war it is OK, because otherwise you'll be killed.
-War
Run or fight. Prompt decision, only two options. So that is where bipolar mind frame came from...
-Peace
Well, in general life we don't want to live in constant alertness and stress as this prohibits growth and well being on the long run!
So, how can be the amount of special circumstances decreased?
The time factor again: preparation and prevention wherever it is possible and according to our best abilities,
BUT:
Does the end (ie achieving less special circumstances) justifies the means?
Well absolutely no. If we bring the means of the special circumstances into the general way of doing things,
then they wouldn't be general anymore, we'd have special circumstance all the time (ie stress and mistrust),
what we need to do is preventing as much trouble as we can with methods that comply with normal and peaceful way of living.
Like long hours of waiting on the motorway because of an accident can be prevented by building
more or wider or safer motorways, or building alternative travel infrastructure,
or training people to be better drivers, or building cars that are less prone to accidents, etc.
(again thinking in long term solutions, based on situational problems, and not stuck in a repeating special circumstance)
5. So how can we prevent a big brother state where there is no fun anymore?
Well, make sure that good will be described as inclusive: as a creative (could be pleasureful) physical, emotional or thinking activity,
that is accepted by all participants of that activity, and has no negative physical, emotional or mental affect on the long term,
and on the short term only as much as all participants would agree in general circumstances.
(ie without the influence of drug, alcohol, propaganda, or true mental illness)
Also notice the word 'general' here, this allows that trying something a few times is morally OK, even if it had short term adverse effects that not all participants would agree on (this includes what you think about what you do too), as long as the participants do learn to give that behavior up, long before it would cause long term damage.
They say it can be told what kind of people live in a house just by looking at the house itself, inside outside.
Now we can see, that it can be told what kind of people are living on that planet, just by looking at it.
You are maybe living in a nice house, but if your house is on a planet where a child dies because of famine in every 5 seconds...
(It is not in the news for some reason... therefore it is normal!) >_

This not really about the things mentioned in the title. It is just a joke by the author. This book is in the reality a very fascinating essay about the connection and relation between Art, Religion, Science and Magic and their ever going periodical changes to one from another.
