My Life as a Gamer

Note: I actually wrote this little autobiographical introduction for the "About Me" section of my profile, but formatting issues made it pretty much unreadable there. Thus, I've decided to turn it into my first blog post. Enjoy. I've been a gaming addict ever since Christmas 1991, when my father gave me a copy of LucasArts' classic adventure game Loom and allowed me to play it for an hour a day on his computer. Though I was a mere ten years old, I took to it immediately, and soon I was saving up my allowance to buy and play through every adventure game LucasArts put out, from The Secret of Monkey Island to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis to Sam'n Max Hit the Road. Then there was Wolfenstein 3D. Initially its allure was almost entirely due to the fact that it was banned in my home country of Germany, but when I finally managed to acquire it (illegally, I should mention - it was the only way), my eyes were opened to a wholly new gaming experience: that of the first person shooter. Needless to say, it was a life-changing event. Then there was Wing Commander. What can I say about this classic game series that hasn't already been said more eloquently in the past? Wing Commander is seminal. Ah, the games of my youth; far, far too many important ones to mention here. I've been an exclusive PC gamer almost all my life. I never owned an Atari or a Super Nintendo or a Nintendo 64. Eventually, though, the rapidly diminishing lineup of great PC games and the rise of truly powerful game consoles caused me to convert. I was first in line to buy an X-Box the day they were released (though I also eventually purchased the inferior PS2 for its game library), and I finally succumbed and acquired a 360 early in 2006. Ever since, I've played through more games than ever before in any period of my life; in fact, I've so far played pretty much anything even halfway decent released for the system. I haven't used my computer for gaming in years now. In fact, I doubt it would be even capable of playing any of the current-gen games anymore. Ce la vie.
