I'd like to see a slow-motion feature added for HD-DVD playback. Currently, the HD-DVD drive will do slow motion play and replay for DVD's, but not HD-DVD's.
One: Lower the price; Two: Bring back the rumble (they are in the process of doing this, I believe, but the sooner it is re-implemented, the happier I will be); and Three: Continue to improve online (I would have bought Virtua Fighter 5 already, but since there is no online, I will be buying the Xbox 360 version -- plain and simple). I just got my PS3 (60GB) just last week, but I have to tell you: It was only because of the killer deal that EB Games is offering until the end of March for trade-ins on next-gen consoles. Had it not been for that, I would be waiting months (if not years) for the price to come down!
FYI, developers like Silicon Knights say that the 360 still has a "memory advantage" due to the 512 MB being "general purpose memory," which means more total memory available to the developers at any given time, while the processor in the PS3 may be a tad faster than the 3-core Power PC chip(s) in the 360. They're calling it about a draw between the two consoles. Me, I'm waiting to see the PS3 games to decide whether I agree or not. I've also been a strong supporter of Microsoft using next-gen DVD storage for its games, but alas, the external HD-DVD drive, while very attractively priced, just ain't up to the task of gaming (due to the interface speed), and I think that's a big miss on Microsoft's part.
I have to admit that while I am curious, I am still very much in "wait and see" mode. I want to try some of the games before I make a decision to buy this sucker. Having a Blu-ray is nice and all, but no one wants to have a "Blu-raytamax" either. I am still also really "cheezed-off" at the rumble being taken out of the controller. Truth be told, if I do buy this later on this year, I would probably only buy the Sony-exclusives for it; any other multi-platform games I would get for the 360 in all likelihood. As I already mentioned, if I do buy this thing, it will be later on this year. No way am I fighting with people or lining up in the cold to get one. Besides, I bet there will still be the inevitable hardware failures on at least some of the launch consoles.
If they can offer the HD-DVD drive cheap, and I mean really cheap, as in $199, then that's great, but the suckage factor will be a little high without the ability to use HDMI and avoid image downgrading in the future by HDCP TV's. I personally don't know about the viability of the HD-DVD format, although I have nothing against it (I like most of Toshiba's stuff). Price might be a factor, though, but it remains to be seen if HD-DVD can carve a true niche for itself in the market.
