Sweden's gaming industry trade organisation "Dataspelbranchen" is planning to give swedish-made games that promote gender equality favorably a special label, according to a swedish website TheLocal.se. The plan has recived 272 000 kr($36 600) from Vinnova, goverment owned innovation agency. Quoting project leader Anton Albiin: "I do not know of any other project in the world asking this question and of course we want Sweden to be a beacon in this area".
However, he says that at this point it's unclear if every swedish-made game has to get the label or if ti could be used for marketing purposes. But, as the above quote reveals, he belives that this is world's first. Quoting the original article: ´He said that as well as analysing the content of the games, Dataspelsbranchen would also look at the processes used by different developers to promote gender equality and diversity, with a view to "helping others to learn from their innovation"´.
Sweden has traditionally seen itself as the pioneers of gender equality and LGBT-rights, for example, gay marriages have been legal there since the ´50s so this is nothing new in the country. In terms of games, the country's industry made 7 billion kr($935 million) last year. Famous swedish-made games include Battlefield franchise, Mirror's Edge, Minecraft, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Hotline Miami and so on.
