Shogun 2 is good yea, alltho its not really an rts but it combines some elements of that aswell.

Crusader King? Thats not even an rts as far as I know, theres no battles ur fighting its more of a managment map based game.

SupCom is sci fi, robots, lazers ..

Yea but what you mentioned was old games, ive been noticing the trend that seems to be increasing as of late, which is that they keep making alot of sci fi RTS games and less and less other games. Dawn of war 1, 2, Supreme Commander 1,2 , C&C 3, Starcraft 2, red alert 3.. And what notable rts do I remember in the past few years that isnt sci fi, probably company of heroes and thats it.

I was just thinking lately how many decent or good strategy games we got over the years and noticed that most of them are either really sci-fi or just plain childish and unrealistic, so I was wondering what do you people think about it? Do you like such games? Why do the developers keep making such games in high numbers?

For me, I like historical games aswell as modern games, I don't even have much against a bit futuristic ones (Take C&C Generals, few decades in the future, nothing crazy unrealistic or sci-fi, just a bit more modern army), but I just can't bring miself to play those really crazy sci-fi futuristic ones, for example dawn of war is hailed as one of the best strategy games yet I just don't particularly enjoy it at all, since its too sci-fi. Then we have another example which is Red Alert 3, which has some elements of some absolutely ridicilous and unrealistic and plain childish things, things like freaking destroyers going on land with tank tracks and stuff like that.. and of course japan is also crazy sci-fi like the thing mentioned before.

So hence I have a hard time since most of the games are too sci-fi for me, so why do you think developers keep making most games like that? Why don't we have many modern history games, or cold war games, or even more historical games like dawn of war for example, apart from company of heroes.

Overall why do you think developers make most game sci-fi and futuristic, do most of the people playing games really prefer that?

I think you would like Starcraft 2 It fits almost everything that you like, it's worth a go :) http://eu.blizzard.com/en-gb/games/sc2/ A expansion released a few weeks back named Heart of the Swarm Let me know what you think :) CMNatic

I played it already, and yes its one of the best strategy games ive ever played..One of those rare games that has treamendus gameplay.. Tho im not a big fan of sci fi/futuristic games, its still one of the best ive ever played so that says alot about the game :P

Some games look interesting, but some are too poor graphics wise ( its not really graphic looks per say but what bothers me in some of those really old games is that effect that the game runs in like 2 frames per second, so its not really that smooth running of the graphics but that lag or animation skip ).

Btw I also forgot to mention I really love skirmish in games, so if the game has a skirmish mode its a big plus.

Ok before you reply and advise some games I have some specific requirements so please don't advise me games that do not belong in those categories.

Also, check my list of games ive played bellow and do not advise me the games that are already on my list.

1st of all, I want historical strategy games, which means no sci fi, all sort of historical games are good tho, alltho I don't really prefer much of that gunpowder era stuff, only up to where guns started being used and then skip to WW2 and forward from there. Fantasy games are ok, so games that might have some fantasy elements such as wizards or dwarfs or whatever are fine aswell, I prefer historical and such but fantasy ones also are ok to mention, just no lazers and robots and such.

2nd of all, im not a graphics freak or something but I prefer to have at least decent graphics and smooth gameplay, for example I like games like AoE and such, but atm I want at least a bit graphical games not games from like 1999 or so, I don't want awesome graphics or anything like that but at least decent ones, say AoE 3 as an example of decent graphics.

Some types of strategy games I like :

- base building types of games (C&C Generals style)

- economy/resource gathering types of games (AoE style)

- turn based map types of games (Total War style)

- Empire building games (Total war style) - I don't like really complex ones like the Darkest Hour or Europe Universalis

Some games I have played and liked so far (Only in the genre im currently looking for as ive played some other ones like starcraft2 and liked aswell) :

Age of Empires series

Empire Earth series

LOTR battle for middle earth series

C&C Generals/ZH

Rise of Nations series

Company of Heroes series

Ancient wars:sparta

Total War series

Heroes of Might and Magic series

Civilization series

C&C Red Alert series ( apart from 3, it was too childish and st*pid )
