My review of The Invention of lying.

The Invention of lying is a film with Ricky Gervais about a man who can lie in a world where nobody does. First of all, don't expect a constant comedy here. Gervais wrote and directed this film, and he tends to throw in drama near the end. Heck most of his big projects like The Office, and Extras have an theme of tragedy mixed with the comedy and this one if no different. Some people may complain, and have already from what I know, that the film is pro athiest and anti christian. Well it isn't pro religion in the slightest thats for sure, but to complain that it is anti religion is a bit silly. Sure the film is very judgemental andbiased when it comes to religion, gervais pretty much becomes Jesus later on. I liked this though, probably because i like comedy that offends a lot of people. Gervais isn't a man who wants to be a god, he just wants to be happy and to be respected in life. He is not that different than David Brent from the Office, or Andy Millman from Extras.

All his characters are losers who want to get some kind of respect, and when it comes down to it this is a simple film about a man who just wants love from someone. It may not be hilarious, but when it comes to heart, Gervais always nails that fine mix of comedy and tragedy. People believe what he says and he becomes a sort of jesus, but they still think he is a loser.. Even the girl he loves only see's what is on the outside. He wants her to love him so he does drastic things that he think help people but they just bring a different kind of harm. The lying thing does get stretched a bit, but overall I really enjoyed this film and I respect Gervais for doing something different. He is also a very good actor, he does an emotional scene in this film that is one of the saddest and most convincing I have seen for a while.

Overll I give it an 8 out of 10.

This score may change, I think this is a film I need to see more than once since I missed a bit when my friend kept talking to me.
