Why Bub and Bob Has Made This More Than a Contest

It was early this morning after tea when I found out about this contest Gamespot is running. The decision of the "Greatest Hero" ever, a contest to decide who is the greatest hero. Now, I admit I had heard of this contest beforehand, but I did not pay much attention to the foolishness. I only thought "Cloud, Mario, Link, they have this contest won. What would my vote count for?" Then, I caught wind of something extraordinary.

Bub and Bob, the two little dinosaurs from Bubble Bobble, was beating Master Chief.

I was astonished. Amazed. Bub and Bob are very special to me. I played Bubble Bobble alot as a little girl. My family was not the richest, but I had a few games for the NES. I got Bubble Bobble for my birthday, and I loved it. I still have the cart and I play it from time to time. I have beaten the game loads of times, and I remember playing it with my friends too. Bubble Bobble captures everything about my childhood in a bottle.

I don't know where these voters are coming from. I suspect many are here just to see MC lose, but seeing so many rally behind Bubble Bobble makes my heart skip a beat. But it also makes me think about the nature of this contest. Most of these match ups are making some clear winners from the start, giving icons like Guy Brush Threepwood, Parappa the Rappa, and Earthworm Jim slim chances at winning. The match ups are a joke and it makes me saddened many icons won't get the recognition they deserve, all because they are going up against big names. Here is my solution. There should have been two brackets. Bracket One would be "The Big Hitters" - Characters of equal popularity would go up against each other. Mario would face Sonic in round one, and so on and so forth. The second bracket would be known as "The Under Dogs." These characters would be those from not exactly big name franchises Manny Calavera would be up against the likes of Guybrush Threepwood. By matching characters against those with equal chances of winning against each other, a more fair competition would rise.

In the end, the result would be the biggest Hitter taking on the biggest Under Dog. That would be a fascinating result. However, I must admit there is hope. I am delighted to see so many unite in love to vote Bubble Bobble to the position it holds now. If it moves on, it only proves there are gamers like me with a voice. I know it's a silly little contest, but a part of me wants to see Master Chief and Cloud knocked down a few pegs. In any case, happy voting. I can't wait to see where this goes.
