My Top Ten Rappers

My current list of top ten MCs (from 90s to today, not including old-school rappers).

1. Tupac (aka 2Pac)

2. Nas

3. Eminem ("Marshall Mathers LP", "Eminem Show", D12)

4. Jay-Z

5. Jedi Mind Tricks

6. Notorious B.I.G

7. Immortal Technique

8. Rakim

9. Dr. Dre

10. Mos Def

Honorable Mentions: DMX, Lupe Fiasco, Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, 50 Cent (older stuff), Andre 3K from Outkast, Xzibit, Chamillionaire ("Ultimate Victory" only), Kurupt.

Honorable Group Mentions: D12, Public Enemy, The Roots, Outlawz, Jurassic 5

What is your list?

50 Cent (what needs to be said)

Is not that bad of a rapper. (this is mostly for Scianix and Supabad who will probably not read this) Yeah I know we had this argument but here's what needs to be said (the argument, then my problems with him)

The Argument:

Sure, he's pretty much sold out/burned out to the industry, but in his prime, he was great. He had a tough life growing up (mother killed when he was 8, father deserted him, hustled from the age of 12, reigned as a local sparring champ in a boxing club in Queens, grew up in gangs), etc. Street cred, toughness, roots in the hood, and a high level of respect is something I look for in most of my favorite rap artists (with the exception of younger guys such as Lupe, actually I dont even know his background). Jay-Z, Nas, Imm. Technique, Tupac, Biggie they all have/had these things, and the same goes for 50. Now you're probably saying, "Oh it doesnt matter where you're from it's all about your lyrics" yeah that's true in a way, but you can be the most intelligent lyricist out there and I won't respect you if you've never taken a step into the hood in your life. To me, hip hop was born out of the ghetto (well that part is fact) and created to report/express the struggles of the streets in creative and poetic ways, so if you're really true to this style of music you have to have a legitimate background, in my opinion, or else you're not real.

He maintained his thug-reputation when he entered the music business and got promoted by Aftermath Records with Dre and Eminem. He always kept it real in that sense. When other rappers started feuds with him (Ja Rule, Fat Joe, The Game, Rick Ross, etc.) he took em for real, such as when he actually knocked the sh*t out of Ja Rule in a club. These feuds caused him to get shot 9 times in a drive-by, and also get stabbed in a break-in. He went on to keep performing and embarrass all of these lame rappers. A lot of rappers in the game fear getting into beef with him. Now, as far as knowing his roots, he probably always will in his heart/head, but unfortunately hasn't expressed it in his latest songs/albums.

So that's one of my main points about him: Being tough and earning respect. This may not apply to you, but to me, I think it's an important factor in a hip hop artist of his category (big east coast/west coast rappers). However, unlike Jay or Nas, he seemed to lose touch with his hood, which I don't really respect.

As far as career in the rap game, he is a hip-hop vet, doing tracks with Tupac ("The Realist Killaz"), and a lot of stuff with Dr. Dre and Eminem, who are all considered some of the greatest in hip hop. His best years were in the late 90s and early 2000s, when G-Unit was just starting to get noticed. (Eminem, after hearing 50's first mixes: "At that point I just wanted to stop rapping altogether. I mean, every song I heard became my new favorite song"). Other greats such as Nas have referred to him as "a hot rapper", "an intelligent rapper", etc. I'm just saying, again, he's a hip hop vet.

His lyrics: This is pretty much the other important factor in a good hip hop artist besides street legitimacy, and are what makes or breaks an artist in the real hip hop world (not necessarily the mainstream, lol). His lyrics, unfortuneately, aren't the best. They are fairly mediocre as far as content goes, in most of his songs anyway. However, his best songs, such as "Hustler's Ambition" (a track from his movie) portray his true lyrical ability, with clever rhymes such as "I build an empire on the low, the narcs don't know, I'm the weatherman I take that coco leaf and make that snow", and more. He has excellent flow as rapper, using his smooth voice to string together smooth rhymes. Now, the CONTENT of his songs... yes, it is about money, about sellin dope (hustlin'), about fine women, and about living the fine life after escaping the hood. I don't really approve of too many rap artists doing this, because these aren't important messages to society or anything like what Pac or Technique would write in a song, but I don't really mind 50 doing this at all. Might sound hypocritical or biased, but he's the only rapper who can successfully write songs about these things and not hear any complaints from a legit hip hop fan like myself (yes, I know what real hip hop is), because A. Most importantly, he has earned my respect, and he has earned all of the fame and fortune by getting through such a tough life and dominating the rap game with some great content in the beginning of his career, and B. He sounds good doing it, he has EXCELLENT beats (you can't say that "Candy Shop" or "Disco Inferno" don't have sick f*ckin beats) and he has GREAT FLOW AND RHYMES THINGS CLEVERLY, and delivers them in original ways. C. Most of his stuff during/after "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" (a damn good hip hop album) is about partying and enjoying life, which again might sound cliche but he can pull it off because he's real about it. He was about hustlin' and money from the start so he technically never really sold out, only got lazier in writing songs. So I view his mid-2000s stuff as one big celebration of life instead of "being arrogant and flaunting about himself", and I can actually dig this celebration because I KNOW his life-story and watched his evolution from a street-hustler to the mansions, so I'm happy for the guy, unlike other sold-out mainstream artists who don't deserve what they got. Also, if you ever listen to a 50 cent interview, you'll see that he's a very cool, very intelligent guy, and not arrogant at all. He's actually humble and a little bit shy. Just had to throw that in there. You say "I don't wanna hear about how much money you have" yeah this is totally understandable, I hate that type of rap too, but 50, to me, is the acception. He is different than other artists who rap about similar things... (See below)

Now, compare this to today's most popular mainstream rappers, such as the infamous Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, etc., who are well-known to be huge contributions to the killing of hip hop. The reason he is not in the same low league as them is that they have no street cred or respectable background (S. Boy still lives with his parents), they sound like sh*t when they rap about women and money and can never create new rhymes, all of their content is unoriginal and unintelligent, while 50 has smooth flow, complex verses, and great delivery. To compare 50 cent to a kid like Soulja Boy is just an unbelievable offense, let's compare their lyrics.

50 Cent, "Many Men (Wish Death)":

"Some days wouldn't be special, if it wasn't for rain
Joy wouldn't feel so good, if it wasn't for pain
Death gotta be easy, 'cause life is hard
It'll leave you physically, mentally, and emotionally scarred
This if for my **** on the block, twisting trees and cigars
For the **** on lock, doing life behind bars
I don't see only god can judge me, 'cause I see things clear
Quick these crackers will give my black ass a hundred years
I'm like Paulie in Goodfellas, you can call me the Don
Like Malcolm by any means, with my gun in my palm
Slim switched sides on me, let **** ride on me
I thought we was cool, why you want me to die homie?"

Ok, those verses were alright, not that deep, but meaningful enough, and had good flow. Now let's look at Soulja Boy:

Soulja Boy, "Gucci Bandana":

"It's Soulja Boy Tellem,
I f**k with Shawty Low,
I f**k with Rock Co.,
Gucci head to toe,
Chain on chill (chill),
Watch on freeze (freeze),
A pound a perk got me looking like Chinese,
Gucci Shades, but they still can't hide me,
Hit the club, seventeen with no ID,
***! I changed up the format,
Welcome to my crib,
Leave your shoes at the doormat,
Uhh, and ain't this B-Tight,
Chains say hello,
Watch say goodnight,
And I still look right,
This is the good life,
Gucci Bandanna just to make me look tight"

Good god. If you can't see the difference in what I recited, just listen to the two songs, and you'll see why the two can't be compared.

50's Cons: Alright, so that was mainly my argument. Obviously he has a lot of cons that keep him out of the league (lyrically) of guys like Nas, Jay-Z, and Pac. Mostly that his lyrics are, admittedly, about women, money, and cars. He always has had good rhymes, beats, and flow, but he lacks the important lyrical content that he actually once had in the beginning. He is one of the richest rappers out there, with a net worth of over 440 million dollars, so after dropping "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" he kind of "retired" and now raps EXCLUSIVELY about his fame.

In conclusion, I never said 50 Cent was as good as some of the greats like Nas, Jay-Z, or Tupac, or underground rappers like Mos Def, The Roots, and Immortal Technique, however he is a good rapper who unfortunately cares more about the money than the music. But, as I said, he still holds my respect due to his high street cred and tough life, and his above-average flow and rhyming skills. His songs are enjoyable and listenable, unlike those of terrible modern day mainstream guys like S. Boy, Wayne, etc. He is below the true hip hop artists, but above today's terrible mainstream.

End of blog.

Help Please

I'm trying to post a really long blog but it says "Tag may not have attribute ID" I think. What the hell? I tried googling this but nothing has helped. I'm just a brotha tryna post a blog. What does this mean?? What must I do?

Hows your summer going

What's up, have your guys' summers been goin so far? Mine is alright, I've been spending a lot of time chillen at my house, reading my dad's books and what not, playin some guitar here and there. Also been going to the Y with friends quite a lot and just got out of basketball camp at Union College just down the road. Other than that, haven't seen too much of my friends. I am going to South Carolina in August though to party it up on Myrtle Beach with my friend Malachi and another guy, then down to Florida with the family. Pretty boring summer so far... my latest endeavor is trying to get back into the warm bed of my ex-girlfriend. She's got a boyfriend though, and she isn't aware of my intentions, but all in good time... After breaking up with her quite a few months back for undisclosed reasons, I thought I was done with girls until college (too many pregnancy scares, arguments, all of it...) but, I found out, you get pretty lonely after a while. Been feelin' the blues lately. But anyway, what about you guys? *No comments* oh well it's all good...

Your Thoughts on Lebron's Decision?

I had never really been a big Lebron James fan, didn't get much out of his personality and felt his play-style was all "drive, travel, dunk", plus he played for such a boring team (the Cavaliers). I acknowledged him as a great player, but was never that into the guy. I was just starting to like him this season though, and when I heard he was a free agent, I became very interested in him. His decision, though... man oh man, what a disappointment.

As a New Yorker, I will always be a Knicks fan, gotta support the home team. They had a great franchise back in the day with Latrell Spreewell, etc., and I feel they have been dealt the short end of the stick for the past decade, mainly due to bad coaching strategy. David Lee with his average of 20 ppg got the team relatively nowhere, and a recovering T-Mac (who will never again get back to his prime it seems) did not help much either. David isn't resigning, doesn't seem like T-Mac will either... hell, they even lost Nate Robinson a little while back to the Celtics. Who did we get in return? Amar'e Stoudemire. The guy's actually one of my favorite players, both on and off the court, and he had an alright thing going with Steve Nash. However, a particularly strong power foward is not enough to carry the Knicks even as far as the playoffs I don't think. Amar'e signed with them yes because he loves NYC (which I believe is a great reason), but also in the hope of luring Lebron James to the Knicks, or possibly another star player if not him. NY has a lot of money to spend, and no superstars to spend it on!

Lebron easily could have built a great team with Amar'e in NY. The two would play perfectly together, both very strong players, plus Lebron can shoot the three. With a few good role-players, they'd have a sure shot at the finals. Plus, Carmelo Anthony is very interested in signing with NY next season, so if he wanted his two superstars, there they were right there! They've also got the money to sign another top player next season as well.

If it wasn't NY, I hoped Lebron would at least go for Chicago (the Nets, Clippers? no chance) after the city was dissed by Wade... I really wanted Dwayne Wade to go to Chicago, first and foremost. It's the guy's hometown, his family lives there... plus he'd have a great line-up with Derrick Rose as PG and Noah as center/F. It'd be a perfect team. However, I fully respected Wade's decision to stay with Miami, the team that drafted him, and try to earn them another championship. When they got Chris Bosh, it seemed like Miami was set, they had their strong shooting guard and their strong forward (Kobe/Gasol). Why add Lebron James into the mix? Sure, they won gold in the Olympics together, but in the NBA it doesn't really seem like Lebron and Wade could play off of each other that well, and they can kiss their hopes of MVP awards goodbye. Not to mention... so much for "The King". Even if he does win a championship or two, he won't really be respected for it like MJ or Kobe because he jumped on the bandwagon and took the easy way out by signing with the most superstars possible.

Lebron also pretty much b*tch-slapped the state of Ohio in the face (all of his loyal fans). Though, this didn't really come as a surprise, after 7 seasons of losing out on a championship, I agree it was definitely time for a change for him. He had no help on that team. I feel bad for the Cleveland fans who are now devastated and have no hope for the future, but I again feel the real people who were ripped off by Lebron's decision were NY fans, it seemed like the perfect setup for him to come. High payroll, Amar'e Stoudemire to play with, bright future for the team, great city... Oh well.

Lebron went to Miami simply because he let his hunger for a championship overcome smart thinking and looking into the future of his career, and the futures of the other teams he could've chosen (cough the Knicks cough). You might claim that Lebron is being "selfless" by giving up fame and fortune (gonna average less PPG, no MVP awards unless he somehow blows out Wade, low-ass payroll with the Heat, etc.)... but that seems like a real high price to pay for a quick championship. All you've heard in the past year is "Lebron vs Kobe eh? Well, who's got the rings? Kobe", but now even if he does get a ring, people'll still say "Yeah, but he got it with Wade and Bosh, like a b*tch).

It's simply not a likeable decision. NBA fans everywhere were let down, not just because Lebron didn't sign with their team, but because... who wanted him to sign with the Heat? That's a totally unexciting way to end the huge hype of the free agency that's been going on for the past month. No one wants to see three huge superstars all play together on the same team, we want to see them have their own teams, and then compete against each other!! It's a really simple concept... say if you're playing pick-up basketball. It's not just that having all of the really good players on one team and the bad players on another is boring to play with, it's boring to watch for the spectators (the fans)! Nobody wanted him to play with the Heat, except for Miami fans who are now all j*zzing their pants. Plus, Miami now has pretty much no money left to afford even mediocre role players on their team. They will be lucky if they can afford a 12 guy bunch this season.

The rest of the country besides Miami is now rooting against the Heat, because they've seemingly become the top dogs, they've got "too much talent" on one team to make it exciting. I still support D-Wade and Bosh, but Lebron makes me now wish that the Heat lose in the playoffs and don't even get to the finals. I was rooting for Boston in the finals against LA, but I now hope to God that Kobe Bryant and his team (if not them, the Celtics) will be the saviors of the NBA and wipe out this unlikable new trio, and crush their little championship hopes, forcing them to disband.

So, what do you guys think about Lebron's decision? I know like 3 people will read this and only 1 or 2 will comment, but it's all good.

Yo, boring update

Been playing a lot of Resistance 2 again lately. The single player and co-op is sexy as always, but the competitive gets me frustrated real quick because of all those Wraith "glitchers". That gun is way overpowered and should be removed from the next game. So far, I've been whittled down to a thin 1.00 k/d, and will most likely be down in the 0.9's sometime soon. Also, not as many people are playing that these days, and the ones that do are like, freakin' clan-frenzy pros. Oh well, just trying to pick up a couple online trophies anyway. One thing I love about that game is how the campaign, co-op, and competitive are all linked together and all add to your XP as you play, like in Uncharted 2.

The MW2 maps are pretty good (Storm and Salvage at least), Crash is awesome as always, Overgrown is lame as always. Started a couple new accounts so I can mess around and play Search more often and what not, however I think I'll forever suck at S&D. Just can't get it down, I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and end up dying 24/7. But other than Search, I've managed to keep the 3.0+ k/d on my main account and turned it around from decreasing to slowly increasing again.

I reached level 30 online in BioShock 2 around 3 weeks ago, but gave that up for a while to play other games. Now, trying to go back and continue ranking up, it's ridiculously boring. I have to scrounge ADAM by hacking vending machines and collecting little ADAM vials around the map, it's tedious and dull. But since I only need the "Choose the Impossible" trophy (reach level 40) to get platinum, I'm sure I'll manage to scrape by 10 ranks. I also have a surprisingly high k/d in that game, around 1.75.

Uncharted 2 is my second most-played game after Resistance. The co-op modes are phenomenal, and the online almost as good. The other day I reached Round 9 in Survival with a couple strangers, it was the farthest I'd ever gotten in one of those modes, earned around 100,000+ points in one game. The new character skins (all the skeletons and sh*t) and the new maps are sweet. I've been slowly working on earning at least a couple of those online trophies. K/d? 1.60's or so.

Well that's the update as far as online gaming goes, just felt like posting it. See you guys on PSN!

What Did You Think of... (GOW Fans, Lemme Know)

The God of War 3 ending? And, while we're here, the story in general?

Personally, I was generally kind of disappointed with the game's story and characters. I'll just ramble and rant on, not thinking about good writing or whatever...

The Gods: At first, I was all revved up and ready to beat the hell out of some gods, and titans if need be. However, I knew something was wrong when I first glanced Zeus. He seemed to have aged a thousand years since the last game, and seemed much darker. His hair locks looked like they were glued together, he just looked bad in general. Athena's new voice actor sounded like some trick from Beverly Hills, not an elegant goddess. Talk about ruining her character. Also, in the scene where the Olympians just started leaping off the top of Mt. Olympus, gods like Hermes, Hades, and Poseidon just looked plain doofy in doing so, it was kind of like a cartoon. What was up with that? Of course I can't hate on their images though, gods and goddesses like Aphrodite, Hera, Hephaestus, Helios, etc. were displayed in a fitting way, just as one would imagine them from Greek mythology, and were interesting characters. But anyway, it seems like all of the gods had lost their composure from the previous games and were just lining themselves up to be slaughtered. Although the cinematics with Poseidon and Hades, such as when Kratos battles them, were pretty damn epic. I believe, in a way, GOW3 made the gods a bit TOO human and stripped them of their previous divinity and the powerful opposition they presented to Kratos.

That's part of the problem with the story; Kratos just goes on through and massacres every single god, one by one in plain order. Some would call this badass, but others would describe this series of events as predictable and boring. The writers or whoever could have done so much more with this. The only hint of a plot twist was when Gaia betrayed Kratos and threw him off the mountain. Alright, interesting, but then he just comes right back and continues on his bloody mission. It seems to be all smooth sailing for him.

In the other games, Kratos had some huge obstacles to overcome, mainly to do with the location he had to venture through to reach his goals. In the first game he had to scale the mountain atop Cronos' back and solve the hazardous puzzles of Pandora's Temples and then make it out of The Underworld to boot. In the sequel, he has to make his way across the Island of the Fates and find the Sisters. In GOW3, hmmm... oooohhhh "The Labyrinth". Boy, that was a big journey. The realm of Hades and climbing around Olympus was pretty cool, but the Labyrinth? I barely remember that sh*t. You solve a couple of pretty decent puzzles, kill a few enemies, and jump around some big floating boxes. It was alright, but how can you let those levels define the entire game? Come on now, you gotta make it memorable and worth the ride!

Alright, now Kratos. He's always been the sh*t. I loved him in the first two games, I developed a real passion for his story about his family and his quest for vengeance. However, in this game... eh. I believe he really went overboard. Firstly, the player loses pretty much all motive for his personal revenge against Zeus. His past seems to be completely behind him and he is now just power-hungry and uncontrollably violent. He no longer seems like the underdog, which is one of the main reasons why everyone supported him so much in the first place. Also, he does not take any concern in the state of the world around him. Why is he so obsessed with chaos in this game? It does not benefit himself, or his beloved city of Sparta, or anything else. He just kills the gods and ruins the world for mankind. Well f*cking done. However, he's still my all time favorite game character and I can't hate on his badassness. 'Nuff said.

THE ENDING! Alright, if you don't want it ruined, don't read, simple. So anyway... DID ANYONE UNDERSTAND IT? What the HELL? The whole deal with Pandora and Pandora's box is a huge mess in my opinion. After Gaia is slain and Kratos destroys Zeus, that either should have been the end of the game right there, or they could've resolved the series in some sort of meaningful way, such as Kratos coming to terms with his past and the rest of the world or whatever. Instead, a very strange conversation ensues with Athena's ghost-spirit, discussing "the power inside of the box" and "what happened when it was released", how the gods got infected by some type of plague or something. Okkkkaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy???? Completely random, made no sense. Oh, and speaking of making no sense, then Athena goes on to talk about how the power given to Kratos from the box is rightfully hers and how "she should be the one to release it to the world". WHAT THE HELL? So he proceeds to impale himself with the Blade of Olympus and, apparently, releases this "power" that he has to the rest of the world. What does Athena say? "Noo! They will not know what to do with it!" WHAT? Who? What the hell is going on...

Athena's last words to Kratos, and the last bit of dialogue in the game: "I am disappointed in you, Spartan." And he dies, leaving the world in complete ruin. The ending is depressing, confusing, and completely unfit to sum up the glorious GOW series. Is it all supposed to be about how Kratos can never really win? Was this his destiny, to ruin the world and kill himself after chatting with Athena about god knows what? I thought Kratos was a violent, revenge-driven champion! A man who knows no fear and does not accept death, and always goes out in glory. I can dig that he killed himself, you know, it was kind of touching, but still... not a fitting end. The credits roll in a dreary, silent, "what the hell just happened" kind of way. Not cool, Santa Monica. Not cool.

Besides the characters and the plot, however, GOW3 is a FANTASTIC game, and will surely go on to win many GOTY awards, etc. It remains the same bloody game that we know and love, with all of the over-the-top brutality and gore, and the entertaining platforming and puzzles. The visuals and sheer scale of the game is nothing short of amazing, I have never seen a game look so beautifully epic. Pretty much everything is improved on. I could, like anyone, go on forever about how great this game is and feel it deserves all of the praise it has gotten. However, I just can't say that I liked it as much as the first two games, because unlike those titles, I don't have a deep connection with the story/events and can't really remember too much of what happened. It was a thrill ride to be sure, but seemed too short and unmemorable. It satisfied me as a gamer, but not as an audience in general. Or something along those lines.

SO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THOUGHT ABOUT IT! I'd really like to know.
