What have you seen your son play that interests you? What about games has caught your eye? That will help you choose what to get. Do you like gunplay? Strategy? Story? Platforming (think Super Mario)? Sports? Stealth action? Indie games (check youtube for examples)? SciFi settings?

Once you narrow down what interests you, you can start trying out games in those categories. But as others have said the biggest barrier will be the controller, no way around it unless you play PC games with keyboard and mouse. Even then you have to move with the arrow keys while simultaneously moving the camera with the mouse. You are going to have to practice till it becomes second nature (not as long as you may think, but it wont happen same day). Even for me it can take time to adjust to a game's camera, as they all have their little quirks.

As long as you are willing to suffer the first week or so you will have a ton of fun once you get the hang of things. Video games today are really unlike anything else, you can read a book or watch a movie (two activities I enjoy), but immersing yourself into a world where you control the character is something else. Best of luck to you, and don't give up!

Mine just came in the mail today and I was surprised when I saw the model #, I had no idea they had already released the 1200. It's funny because I was feeling bad thinking I should have waited for 1200 instead of ordering the older model. I guess it worked out in the end.

i only just ordered my third game (SSF4) and ive had my ps3 for a couple of years now, i have a couple of PSN games but that doesnt really count. its mainly because soon after getting it i stopped playing games almost completely. so now i really only play when im not in school (summer, winter break) and i dont usually have the money to buy games, given the fact that i usually spend any money i have on guitars or guitar related gear. in fact its probably been a while since ive posted on these forums.

that depends on 2 things:

cost of repair vs new PS3

and

whether or not you make use of the BC on your current PS3
