Sony's PlayStation 3 Slim has tough game ahead of it

Last week at the Gamescom trade show in Germany, Sony finally announced a cheaper version of its struggling PlayStation 3 games console, the PS3 Slim, which is expected to reach the shops early next month. American and European consumers will see PS3 prices fall by $100 and €100 respectively to $299 and €299, while UK buyers will see a £50 price drop to £249.99.

Andy House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, undoubtedly heard the cries for a £100 price cut in the UK, but given Sony's financial problems, £50 is the best he can do. He knows most consoles are sold after the price drops below the £200 barrier, but Sony is closing factories and shedding staff, and the PS3 is selling at a loss. As his chief executive Sir Howard Stringer recently quipped: "I lose money on every PlayStation I make – how's that for logic?"

House says Sony is trying to broaden the console's appeal beyond the gaming fan base. "I think the lower price point gives you the opportunity to branch out into more of a family market," he says. "We've put in place new brand positioning before the PS3, and the strapline is 'The game is just the start'. The idea is to have a broader entertainment offering."

"At our press conference, I spent a considerable amount of time talking about the improvements we've made to PSN [PlayStation Network], and we confirmed the launch of a video delivery service in major markets in Europe this November. We also talked about catchup services for television available on PS3, with the BBC's iPlayer for the UK market.

"Within the gaming world, we're moving from a relationship that ended when we sold them [customers] a game to one where their relationship with us begins with that game, and obviously takes its life online. And also, the PS3 is a multifunctional device and a gateway into multifunctional entertainment."

This was always the core PlayStation 3 strategy, of course, but with the emphasis on selling Blu-ray movies. House puts a positive spin on this: "We're very fortunate in having a sister company that's a Hollywood movie studio, with whom we're working in close collaboration," he says. But Blu-ray got embroiled in a battle with HD DVD, and Microsoft's focus on its Xbox Live online strategy turned out to be much more successful. The future, surely, is downloads.

But times are hard. At this point in the games console life cycle, the three main suppliers – Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft – should be growing sales as their machines benefit from price cuts and the appeal of their growing software catalogues. Instead, the market is in decline and they are all having to watch the pennies.

Nintendo has been hit worst: sales of the all-conquering Wii fell from 5.2m to 2.2m units for the second quarter, a 57% decline compared with the same period last year. Nintendo's revenues fell by 40% to 253bn yen (£1.6bn), and profits were down by 61%. But at least it made money, unlike Sony and Microsoft's entertainment divisions.

At Sony, PS3 sales fell from 1.6m units last year to 1.1m in the same quarter, while sales of the PlayStation Portable plunged from 3.7m units to only 1.3m. Both suffered the ignominy of being outsold by the antique PlayStation 2, which shifted 1.6m units. Still, the division that contains Sony Computer Entertainment lost ¥39.5bn ($418m) in the quarter, which is more than Sony's overall corporate loss of ¥37bn.

Microsoft was the only one of the three to claim an increase in console shipments to 1.7m units compared with 1.3m in the same quarter last year, though this was only after it reduced prices. Overall, Microsoft's entertainment and devices division saw revenues slip by 2% to $1.6bn and last year's $106m (£65m) profit turned into a $31m loss.

Microsoft was able to cut prices by updating its console to use a processor fabricated using a more advanced 45nm process. Sony, which launched later than Microsoft, has now reached the same stage and the PS3 Slim similarly benefits from a move to 45nm. The new processor is cheaper to manufacture, uses about 11% less power and generates less heat. Sony has therefore taken the opportunity to reduce the size of the case, just as it did when it launched the slimline version of the PlayStation 2. Or, you might say, just as Microsoft didn't, following its struggle to stop the Xbox 360 from overheating.

Sony has also benefited from a huge reduction in the cost of fitting a Blu-ray drive, which pushed the original PS3 manufacturing cost to something approaching $850 per unit. Chief financial officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, said Sony had reduced the manufacturing cost by "about 70%, roughly speaking". This would put the unit cost at about $250 – not counting marketing and advertising or the dealer's profit margin – on a machine that sells for $299.

Console manufacturers traditionally make up the difference from profits on high-priced games and peripherals, but you can understand Stringer's dislike for the short-term financial consequences. And if the cost estimates are roughly correct, the PS3 is still in a deep financial hole from which it will take years to recover.

This is the main reason for thinking that John Carmack, a founder of id Software, is wrong in speculating that Sony could be the first to "jump the gun" and move to the next generation with a PlayStation 4.

"I'm very intrigued as to why that speculation has emerged," says House. "I would have thought the new model is indicative of a much longer life cycle. The overall trend for me is that we've moved away from a short-term, toy-based life cycle to one that more closely resembles other consumer electronics devices. One of the reasons we feel tremendously confident about the PlayStation 3 business is that the [online service] allows us to offer a new value proposition to entrants to the market, while at the same time, adding value to the PS3 experience for existing users."

Carmack's speculation is based on the fact that delays to the PS3's launch put it behind Microsoft in the product cycle. Sony is now trailing in third place. Being first with a next-generation console could change that, but it's hard to imagine what the next generation PlayStation would look like.

Sony aimed high with the PS3, and paid heavily for the development of the Cell processor and Blu-ray drive. Taking either of those forward would be even more costly. It's much easier to imagine a new Xbox 360 with a faster processor, Blu-ray instead of DVD and Project Natal body control functionality built in. And the Wii, which is relatively underpowered and has much worse graphics than the PS3 or Xbox, could easily be improved.

Still, the lower price of the PS3 Slim is certain to boost sales in the short term, and it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will respond. Being ahead of Sony on the cost-reduction curve, it could cut the Xbox 360's price. But having just announced its first-ever fall in annual revenues, Microsoft might not be keen to do that.

Even with Wii sales collapsing, it seems unlikely that the PS3 Slim will win the important Christmas sales battle. However, at least it's still in the fight.

Project Natal (Birth of Next-Generation Entertainment)

Project Natal

The Project Natal sensor device.

Project Natal is the code name for a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. Based on an add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, in a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands, or presented objects and images. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical base. Project Natal was first announced on 1 June at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Microsoft said that over 1000 development kits began shipping to game developers that same day.

Though Microsoft has not officially announced any price or release date projections for Project Natal, it is expected to be released in late 2010. Project Natal will reportedly also serve as the basis for a "new" Xbox 360.

Sensor device

An approximately nine-inch (23cm) wide horizontal bar connected to a small circular base with a ball joint pivot, the Project Natal sensor is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an "RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software", which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities. The Project Natal sensor's microphone array enables the Xbox 360 to conduct acoustic source localization and ambientoise suppression, allowing for things such as headset-free party chat over Xbox Live.

The depth sensor consists of an infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor, and allows the Project Natal sensor to see in 3D under any ambient light conditions. The active depth-sensing range of the depth sensor is adjustable, with the Project Natal software capable of automatically calibrating the sensor based on the gameplay and environment conditions, such as the presence of couches.

Project Natal is reportedly based on software technology developed internally by Microsoft and hardware intellectual property acquired from time-of-flight camera developer 3DV Systems. Before agreeing to sell all its assets in March 2009, 3DV had been preparing its own depth-sensing webcam controller, known as the ZCam.

Described by Microsoft personnel as the primary innovation of Project Natal, the software technology enables advanced gesture recognition, facial recognition, and voice recognition. The skeletal mapping technology shown at E3 2009 was capable of simultaneously tracking up to four users for motion analysis, with a feature extraction of 48 interest points on a human body at a frame rate of 30 hertz. Depending on the person's distance from the sensor, Project Natal is capable of tracking models that can identify individual fingers.

Technology demos

Three technical demos were shown to showcase Project Natal when it was revealed at Microsoft's E3 2009 Media Briefing:

  • Ricochet - a Breakout-like game in which the entire body is used to bounce balls at blocks.
  • Paint Party - where the player can make throwing motions to splash or draw with paint onto a wall. He/she can choose colours using speech recognition, and can pose to make stencils.
  • Milo and Kate - a game in development by Lionhead Studios, in which the player interacts with a young child (Milo or Milly, selected by the user at the start) and his/her dog Kate, using items and passing him/her virtual items from real life actions. In an interview after the demonstration, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux confirmed that the demo was in fact the long running Project Dimitri. In the demonstration available at E3 2009, only Milo was available to interact with.
  • Burnout Natal - not showcased as a live demonstration, a demo based on Burnout Paradise in which the player uses an invisible steering wheel to control the vehicle.
  • Facial Recognition - where the player is able to sign in to their gaming account purely based on their face.
  • Dress Up - Players are able to shop and try on clothes in 3D.
  • Monster- An animated game in which the player is a monster and achieves points by destroying and damaging virtual buildings and other virtual objects in a city setting. When the player makes a roaring-like noise, the monster too will roar and a jet of light comes out of the monster's mouth.

Deep Belief in Aliens

How do we know, alien exist, we don't have any evidence and no substantial reports were made, and so far science have somewhat included aliens in their face books. We know the definition of Science as "Knowledge made my observation and experiment" 'not prediction'- which for now make it intricate for accepting new specimen or discovery made through the light of Science before thorough examination. So, as for now, we know that Alien doesn't exist. I feel pity of the believer who believes that in the end we are going to be abducted by Aliens, Highly intelligent being who's intellect and intelligent transgress ours. Where we can see, in our Holy Scripture e.g the Quran mentions directly that we are the best of Thee Creation. As until now, there is no doubt that our Deity is wrong.

Just reminding the humanity to worship your Lord and praise him for any good occurs and repent and ask for mercy if something wrong occurs.

Movie "Knowing"

The Movie Directed by Alex Proyas. With Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne. The plot goes as ateacher opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.

I should rate this movie according to the Base Acting and effects and I am going to give it 9 out of 10. This is a must watch movie, especially for the mystery lovers. Nicolas Cage acted very well so as Chandler Canterbury. Overall this is again a fair movie directed by Alex.

Mere Tools Of The Gaming Industries, Us!

The Exclusive Games are becoming unfair nevertheless I have all the consoles. This statement doesn't only narrow the idea forward my opinion but the entire gamers' society. Look at us, bragging about our favorite consoles even when they don't deserve it. Exclusive features are making us savages, insulting and ignoring others become they are in disadvantage of some sort. The gaming industries are playing with us, forcing us to buy combination of consoles to enjoy decent games, when we should be the ones who will encourage and conduct the Industries itself. Depriving our humanity and mutating us to become their tool. Gamers are altered to become the Business of The Industry. Now to play our favorite games, we have to buy another console? What is this, repression? Spending extra money to buy additional console, it this for real? WE ARE SUFFERING FROM ECONOMICAL TURMOIL and ALL THE GAMING INDUSTRY CARES ABOUT THEIR Selfish incentives.

Will we stand this unaesthetic oppression, or we gonna bring the war to them.

Sam Fisher's work is never done and now he is taking down enemies as if you have never seen him before. He is faster, deadly and pack with more guns and gadgets. He is now a host to a number of new gameplay features for the series. One of these is the Mark & Execute characteristic. enabling the player to tag an opponent or object that allows him to fire at automatically. The feature prioritizes the targets: for instance if Sam enter a room with two enemies and a light fixture and the light and one enemy are target. He will take out the light first to prevent others to detect him and then engage the enemy. There is also the "last known location" feature, which occurs when Sam has been spotted but breaks the line of sight with the enemy. This produces a silhouette outlining Sam's last known location that the enemy saw him, allowing him to alter his actions accordingly. and also enable interrogating enemies using the environment, such as smashing someone's head into a mirror. Sam will not be able to rely on many of the gadgets that he possessed in previous games, so he must be more resourceful. For instance, instead of using his optic cable in order to look beneath doors, Sam will use a piece of a broken mirror off his SUV.

Sam Fisher is in his ultimate form, use him to determine the greatness of his experience This Q4 of 2009.
