No, if it's one thing that's 100% true in the series it's that the fans hate change.

Keep it as close to the main franchise guidlines as possible. Don't screw it up with new people or turning him into a wolf or a cow or a rabbit.

Well, now we have the Wii - a slightly upgraded Gamecube with a fantastic peripheral to control games with (hideously under used by the way) and good wireless (and subscription free) online capabilities (also hideously under used to the point where I wonder if Nintendo have put a stop on the idea of online leagues and battles etc); and it uses the same size disks that everybody else is using.
