RRW: Retro Revival Week Begins!

first up on the menu was some NES action!

Dr. Mario

I had the pleasure of recently getting this game in one of my acquisitions. Man, no matter how old this game gets, I still can get pretty darn high in this game. I played for a few hours (with some pausing) on my first play. I still haven't lost that ol' touch :P

Did You Know?

-As popular as this game is, there has only been two real sequels: Dr. Mario 64 and Dr. Mario Online RX. It's been featured in a few collections though.

-The game also exists in Brain Age 2 and can be discovered by touching the bottom slot in the training section, even if it is blank. It is called Virus Buster.

-"The viruses have never been given any formal names, and are known simply as "Red Virus," "Blue Virus," and "Yellow Virus". The Nintendo Comics System (a series of comics produced by Valiant) included an issue called "The Doctor Is In... Over His Head," which depicts a story of Dr. Mario based on the original NES and original Game Boy titles. The comic names the blue virus "Chill," the red "Fever," and the yellow "Weird." These names were later used in Dr. Mario 64."-wiki

Donkey Kong Cla$$ics

This game was one of the games I owned when I has my nes. the game I recently got though is a much better copy. I used to prefer DK jr. as a kid, but now, as I'm older, I prefer the original donkey kong. Who would have though? And way on my first try I got through a few cycles. I played it for over an hour, dabbling in donkey kong jr. as well, but doing really poor in Dk jr. I'm rusty for sure in that game. Surprisingly, I did pretty well in the original Donkey Kong even though i haven't played it in years.

Did you know?

-The 2007 motion picture documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters explores the world of competitive ****c arcade gaming and tells the story of Steve Wiebe's quest to beat Billy Mitchell's world high score in Donkey Kong.

Kickle Cubicle

This was my first time playing this game. first off, wow, much better puzzler then i expected. if you ever played the Adventures of Lolo series, it's similar to that but a bit different. Definitely one of the better titles for the NES. I played this for a good while this morning. I'll probably continue the quest later this week (or after RRW).

-Both the Japanese and U.S. versions of Kickle Cubicle feature a cameo by Kid Niki: Radical Ninja. To see it, hold down the A button on Controller 2 and then turn on the game. Continue holding A until the title screen appears, and Kid Niki will appear.

-The Japanese version tends to have more enemies present in the various levels.

-In the Japanese and English versions, the player can attempt the different worlds in any order. In the North American release, the world order is fixed.

The Adventures of Lolo

The Final NES Game for today was The Adventures of Lolo. First time playing this game too, I was drawn in. it's a pretty deep puzzler, and I'm not surprised it became such a cult cla$$ic. Seriously if you like puzzlers you might want to pick this game up on the Virtual Console (or if you can, the NES cart.)

Did You Know?

-Lolo and Lala, the games' protagonists, have appeared in the Kirby games under the monikers Lololo and Lalala, where they play a more antagonistic role. Both game series are made by HAL Laboratory, Inc.

Mega Man X5

I still know this game like the back of my hand. I played the Psone version in this case. The PC versions as the first game I ever played on my first owned PC. I've played this game till end more times then I should admit. :P I played for a while, getting halfway (Maybe I should do a time trial one day?)

Did you Know?

-for the first time ever in a Mega Man game, each character had the ability to duck.

-This was intended to be the last MMX game, to make way for Zero series for GBA. But Capcom had other plans...

Omega Boost

Each time I play this game I'm wowed. I'm still wowed. it's one of the best looking PSOne games ever made. The battles still wow me. It's an excellent blend of new school controls with old ways. It's also becoming a roe expensive game to find on the internet from what I heard.

Did you know?

-'Similarities between Omega Boost and Sega's Panzer Dragoon series led to a rumor that former members of Team Andromeda, dissolved in 1998, had joined Polyphony Digital. This rumor turned out to be true as the lead designer and programmer on Omega Boost was Yuji Yasuhara [1], who had worked on Panzer Dragoon Zwei."-Wiki

Finally, I spent some time with some Atari Cla$$ics via Atari Anniversary Edition for PC. In sort I dabbled here and there, but spent most of my time with Crystal Castles, Centipede and Millipede. Centipede is a fav of mine since I sued to play the arcade machine near a drive in movie place near where I live. I wonder if it's still there...

I'm playing Sonic The Pocket Adventure right now and it's quickly becoming on of my fav Sonic games ever.

I think I made the most of RRW day 1 and the weekend in geenral :P
