Metroid Fusion

07 / 11 / 2006

Ok, so I just went through Metroid Fusion. It was fun. As I was playing the game, I thought the most important character of it, everything revolving around it, would be the SA-X. I thought there would be a final moment where you found out it actually was an intelligent being with hopes and dreams, so that the story would turn the other way around. But no, the X virus is just as dumb as it is supposed to be all the way through, and the game is centered on scientists' boring desires to keep the station running. In the end you find out there are metroids in the station's secret lab; but this is not as much of a surprise as the developers of the game want you to think, since scientists already show you they have well-kept metroid cells at the start of the game, and they use them to cure you. After that, you have an argument with the computer, and you discover he's a nice guy after all (harsh in his way of speaking, but good-willed). He helps you to destroy the station, supposedly killing all X viruses with it. All-time fans will enjoy this moment of reunion with good ol' Adams' way of being (the computer), but I don't think it's a big deal anyway. I was expecting a richer story to the game.

Overall I think the game's well-made. It's fun during the several hours of gameplay you'll go trough; graphics, sound and story is rounded-up nicely. It is worth the price asked. However, it's not as great as the media wants you to think. It's an enjoyable series, it's a good time-waster, but there's not much insight to it. The motivation for further exploration once you've completed the main adventure is non-existent. Honestly, I've got better things to do than go through levels and levels of never-dying annoying creatures just for the sake of having more missile storage. There's no attractive extras that will push you to do that. Also, when you've got enough cool gadgets to start to demand some really challenging missions, you find the game is over. Bosses aren't challenging enough, lots of them you can kill by just staying in the right place and shooting all the time.

I try to find good traits for the game, but it's clear that it has dissapointed me a bit. Good game for average standards, falls short in excellence.
