You basically have a home base that you freely move around in. So you can talk to people and buy stuff, etc. The Story in Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is amazing. It has a good pace and can even be serious when it wants to but its probably the most hilarious game I have ever played (excluding the sequels).

Edit: Oh, and yeah you can choose where to fight and stuff, it basically has everything you can want in a videogame, optional bosses, side quests, extra characters, overpowered weapons, teleportation (sort of), you get what I'm saying.

I see you own FFT, so you might give Disgaea a try; it's similar in that it is an SRPG. I didn't much like it, but I know many people do. hockey73
