Resident Wii-vil

Despite a days delay thanks to the postal strike, Resident Evil 4 Wii edition is here. But don't have time to play it until tonight.... curses

Finished Final Fantasy I Anniversary on the PSP so can spend some time in the murk and gloom. Delighted there's now a 'mature' game for Wii as well... Even though it is rated'18' on the box, '15' on the disc and 'not suitable for children under 36 months' on the manual... come on Nintendo, sort it out! Especially as MGS: Portable Ops got delayed from the stores for having the wrong label on its box. With this and both games and adverts being banned, game companies really should sort the basics out...

Gone wii-ing

As if Final Fantasy Anniversary on PSP wasn't eating enough of my life, a Nintendo Wii has dropped into the house. The family gaming fun of Sports and Play mean it might be simplistic, but you can't beat competitive gaming. Can't wait for Resident Evil - (meets House of the Dead) now that will be top stuff!

The rush is on...

Madden and Syphon Filter (finally) out on the shelves, depending on which store you look in - weird how they can't even manage a co-ordinated launch today, no wonder game sales are dying.

Went for Filter first as it is supposed to only take a few hours to play through. First looks are really impressive for a PSP game, almost - once you get used to needing an extra hand for the control...

Lego Star Wars out next week as well, its like Christmas without the wrapping paper, or annoying relatives!

So Sllllooooooooww

Thanks to the late summer game drought, I've finally snapped and rushed out to buy Lumines (2nd hand) and Monster Hunter Freedom (on sale and despite the lukewarm reviews). Two games for the price of one and ages of gameplay. Gave Lumines and quick spin and quickly hypnotised by its beauty... more to come, just hope the rush of quality new games doesn't squash them out of my mind

My first rental!

As the local movie place is renting PSP games for 5 days now I figured it's time to try something I'd might buy, someday, maybe! So NBA Street Showdown is first up, it took a few goes to get used to the camera, especially trying to bag a rebound, and the combo system, this is a game where button mashing at first seems to give me more success than trying to play with a strategy.

It soon becomes obvious that the winning with cheap points gets more results than racking up the big jams and towards the end of a game you just want to win it and move on, especially in King of the Courts, rather than hang around playing tricks all day.

The mini games have some appeal but I wish there was a mini-game/trainer mode so you can learn where and when to throw the big combos

So, a few days isn't really enough to "get" this game but I figure I might pick it up, or the inevitable sequel once EA has smoothed things out a bit, its got good PSP-ability with short games, smooth visuals and enough tricks to keep you smiling, anyone else reckon this is worth buying?

Cracked it!

Ridge Racer is no more, finally spanked the EX tours and was really narked to find that the race I was stuck on was the hardest one. I breezed through the remaining tours and got all the prizes. Shame there's no cool ending movie and I'm not even going to bother with the Max tours - they're just silly!

So on with Football Manager Handheld and the task of dragging lowly Bournemouth up into the Premiership.... A tiny transfer budget means that might take some doing and a lot of planning. It's been years since I last played the PC edition but we'll see.

End of the line...

Arrrghhh! Has Ridge Racer finally beaten me? The final race on EX Tour 36 and I can't even get close to that first place spot. Played until my eyes have stayed crossed and I just can't concentrate. It's only a class 4 race so there's no trouble overtaking but the course, Ridge Racer Highway R seems too short to catch the leader! lap times are a 1.24, 1.18, 1.19 and can't find any more speed Curses and damn!

If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it, until then back to OutRun and maybe have a shot at finishing Eternia.

OUT TODAY - Tomb Raider, can I be bothered to rush out and get it? Um, no - not with the world cup kicking off this afternoon.

Back to the past

Put Ridge Racer in my PSP after about six months rest last night? Why am I so much better at it now than I was last year? Odd but I'm now piling through the Pro tour and looking forward to the super cars! OK so my skills obviously aren't that hot compared to users who finished the whole thing in a day but its wierd how fast it came back to me, maybe playing lots of Gripshift and Burnout has primed me better for RR.

Next game to get, was going to be Monster Hunter but might wait until it appears cheap on eBay, then again it has sold 600,000 in Japan - so maybe, just. Instead definitely getting Dark Mirror and Katamari, never played either on the PS2 so can safely ignore any of those "disappointed if you played the old version" review comments

Gripshift is good!

To hell with the lukewarm to negative reviews. Gripshift is the most addictive game I've played all year.

Firstly, I got it second hand off eBay so apologies to the developers for not contributing to their existence as they deserve it. If it'd got ace reviews then I'd brought it first hand!

Secondly, imagine Lemmings meets Sonic meets a racing game. Each level has five objectives; bronze, silver and gold times, collect the stars and collect the hidden token. Bronze should be easy to get, silver will push your track skills to the limit while for gold you usually have to figure a way to skip the track and fly to the end in the most direct route.

With most levels running from 10 to 30 seconds, you can cock it up and be having another go almost instantly. Relentlessly refining your skills and trying new ways to get that token stuck on top of a remote hill or trying a slightly new angle to fly off the ramp.

With new characters, cars, decals and wheels to collect plus some great bonus games GripShift is perfect PSP fodder, short bursts of action, easy to get back into and packing hundreds of little challenges to tease you. The gamespot review said it was let down by the steering, Yes the physics of the cars are tricky, but its a puzzle game first, a racer second and you do get used to it and can take advantage of the different cars to grab the previously elusive tests.

Great fun, can't put it down, shame there's no download extras!

Two weeks to go...

Until the UK launch of the PSP which means I won't have to spend £50 a go on import games. Word is that GTA will be available at launch so I think that'll be the first title to grab. With just three games to my collection I'm pleased the Sony is still pushing out the new Wipeout Pure downloads, each new track and vehicle adds a little extra and will put my back in that game for a couple of days. Its a shame that this is the only game (that I know of) that's using this feature.

The 2.0 browser looks really smart and functions perfectly but now I hope to see lots of PSP specific sites to take advantage of it, streaming media and great collections of pics - here we come!
