Got myself a new PC..

Old specs:

P4 3 GHZ HT, 1 GB DDR 400, 6800GT, 160 GB HD

New specs:

Core 2 Duo E6600, 2 GB DDR2 667, 8800GTS 640MB, 320 GB HD

I only kept my monitor from the previous PC (Viewsonic VP191b). I plan to replace it within the next 12 months, probably by a 24 inch model.

I use a dual boot XP /Vista config. Vista isn't so bad as a lot of people claim. Once you get used to it (after one or 2 weeks), you'll start to choose it over XP.

I only had to do a few things to get rid of some really annoying stuff

1) turn of UAC. I mean really what's the point of havinh a popup each tiem you want to chnage a system setting?

2) turn off IPv6 in your network adapter. This causes conflicts with P2P programs for example. Even with it disabled, I don't get the same kind of network performance as on XP :(

3) Disable DEP for rundll32 kernel.I have no idea where this comes from , but this kept generating errors from day 1so I disabled it. No more problems.

I made a mistake

Yea I know.  It's stupid. I bought a game that Gamespot didn't review yet. Oh well it was only 30 euro and I was bored so I got myself Resident Evil 4.

This game received universal acclaim when it was released on Gamecube and the PS2 port wasn't too shabby either. What could go wrong with a PC version? Well, everything that can go wrong did go wrong apparently.

The graphics aren't that bad from a game that is already a few years old. The textures are dull and the lightning simplistic but the advantage is that the game runs relatively well even on the minimal hardware requirements. There are no graphics options except for the resolution.

The game features a mix of video sequences and live-action. The resolution of those videos is really low (TV res), in contrast with the real-time sequences. On the GC those transitions were seamless, not so on PC. At least you can skip them.

This is a third-person shooter and controls either make or brake a game. In this case it's the latter. For starters, there is no mouse support. It's either a gamepad or the keyboard. This is simply unacceptable.
If you're amongst the lucky few with a dual analog gamepad for PC the game might be playable, otherwise, forget about this game. It's as simple as that. The keyboard just doesn't allow the precision required to aim at your opponents. The game uses button combinations to achieve simple tasks like reloading your gun. The default keyboard configuration is horrible with a combination of wasd keys for moving, directional keys for looking around, right shift, left shift, right control, left control and the enter key to perform several actions. In this game you have to press and hold the right shift to lift your gun, move with the directional keys to aim then press enter to fire. It just doesn't get any more user-unfriendly like that.

To make things worse, certain sequences require you to press a combination of those keys rapidly. The keys are referred to as 1 to 12. It's up to you to figure out what keys you have mapped to those numbers.  Did I mention that you can remap (yay) the keys but you have to quit the game in order to do so (the only option in-game is to invert the axis...great)?

This could have been a good game.  Instead, it's another example how to ruin a good game with a bad port.

Unions

A good idea?

A union is nothing more than a webpage that will only be accessed from the GS forums by a small portion of the users there. Now the forums alone don't get enough attention to further devide that attention to numerous unions.

The treshold for creating an union is low so we're going to see quite a lot of unions at start that will die out after a few weeks because of lack of content and lack of visitors, like most user-created boards or websites.

Taking long-awaited break

Yea , it's a little late but finally going on vacation. 2 weeks of South-Africa. Over there , it's spring, a welcome change. CYA all.

Finally arrived!

New PC finally arrived...spend the whole day configuring the thing and transferring data from the old PC. Gotta hate having to input all those user info and passowrds again (if you remember them)...at least i remebered to save my favorites.

The only problem I see is that it came with SP2 installed. I am sure it will cause certain programs not to work properly anymor...which means patch hunting again.

On the bright side everything runs super smooth (and silent) now and my 3dmark score increased tenfold.
