Yea I know. It's stupid. I bought a game that Gamespot didn't review yet. Oh well it was only 30 euro and I was bored so I got myself Resident Evil 4.
This game received universal acclaim when it was released on Gamecube and the PS2 port wasn't too shabby either. What could go wrong with a PC version? Well, everything that can go wrong did go wrong apparently.
The graphics aren't that bad from a game that is already a few years old. The textures are dull and the lightning simplistic but the advantage is that the game runs relatively well even on the minimal hardware requirements. There are no graphics options except for the resolution.
The game features a mix of video sequences and live-action. The resolution of those videos is really low (TV res), in contrast with the real-time sequences. On the GC those transitions were seamless, not so on PC. At least you can skip them.
This is a third-person shooter and controls either make or brake a game. In this case it's the latter. For starters, there is no mouse support. It's either a gamepad or the keyboard. This is simply unacceptable.
If you're amongst the lucky few with a dual analog gamepad for PC the game might be playable, otherwise, forget about this game. It's as simple as that. The keyboard just doesn't allow the precision required to aim at your opponents. The game uses button combinations to achieve simple tasks like reloading your gun. The default keyboard configuration is horrible with a combination of wasd keys for moving, directional keys for looking around, right shift, left shift, right control, left control and the enter key to perform several actions. In this game you have to press and hold the right shift to lift your gun, move with the directional keys to aim then press enter to fire. It just doesn't get any more user-unfriendly like that.
To make things worse, certain sequences require you to press a combination of those keys rapidly. The keys are referred to as 1 to 12. It's up to you to figure out what keys you have mapped to those numbers. Did I mention that you can remap (yay) the keys but you have to quit the game in order to do so (the only option in-game is to invert the axis...great)?
This could have been a good game. Instead, it's another example how to ruin a good game with a bad port.
