@Lattata: the Windows 10 store version and Xbox players can play together, but the Windows steam version can't currently which is why I asked the question.

I plan on purchasing the Xbox One digital edition of Ark in order to take advantage of the PC cross play function, but I noticed the only version available is the standard game. Will the explorers edition be available for purchase prior to release on Xbox Live or Windows store?

Is there a possibility at some future point that Windows 10/XBL users would be able to play with those that purchased on steam? At some point could the Windows 10 version possibly be activated on steam?
