Kubuntu is better

a lot of people who use ubuntu, or are thinking about it probably onlyu vaguely heard of kubuntu, and probably couldnt tell you much about it. there also seems to be a growing number of linux/ubuntu users on the forums, so i thought i might shed some light on the difference, commonalities and why you should actually opt for kubuntu instead.

1. Underneath, its actually the exact same thing.

the only thing different is the desktop environment, you can use all the same programs.

2. KDE vs GNOME

most people on the forums use ubuntu, so youre more familiar with gnome more likely. and ill be honest here going from gnome to kde is a bit of a change and i hated kde for a while. but once i got to the point where i knew, unless i was extremely gifted at photoshop(or gimp) i was not going to make a nice looking panel for gnome. infact, i think the gnome panel is pretty dull looking, or downright ugly. the only thing gnome has going for it, is how organized it is. But even Linus Torvald (created the linux kernel) seems to dislike gnome for the fact that they take away functionallity and customization.

when i first used KDE (the desktop environment in Kubuntu) i noticed that it had much more practical ideas, but since i wasnt used to it i found my self getting annoyed. and the fact that, by default every program you run during the last session will open up the next time you reboot. so i didnt give it a chance.

So, I was going to do a reinstall of ubuntu, to give it a real partition. I dont have my ubuntu disc i lent it out. but I had my kubuntu disc and decided what the hell. I knew that I liked the way KDE looked more, so I figured i would force myself to figure it out. once I got it, I found it to be really awesome. the panel automatically looks better and is infinately more customizable than gnome, installing icons is way easier (you can actually use a gui to search for the theme instead of using the terminal) and if you want the panel to be different looking, theres a ton of artwork available on kde-look.org that is actually NICE looking as opposed to the ones found on gnome-look.org

one thing I hate about gnome, and (i must really stress hate... ) is that the applications place and system is done in text. So if you want a dark window theme, and a dark panel theme you have to make the letters very light, and thats how all text on windows are going to be. even if you dont want it to be white on the windows.

in KDE, thats never even been an issue. KDE looks fantastic the entire time. not to mention, Kubuntu comes with the dolphin file manager. which lets you open files as root right from it, as opposed to going into the terminal and browsing it that way. Very convienient.

Holy crap I installed Wireless for Ubuntu and didnt even know it!

Well, I sort of did. for a few months now ive been trying to get wireless to work. I followed every little tutorial online and got nothing. At least thats what I thought.

I was a helpless windows user who knew a few linux commands from using telnet back in the day. But now I have the answers.

I had ndiswrapper installed and such, as as far as I could tell I did have the driver installed (albeit not the most recent one, but never the less it was for my card) and people had me using Wifi-Radar. The problem with Wifi Radar is that I was able to get it to see the SSID's (the wireless networks) but it couldnt "acquire and IP address"

at one poin I thought to myself, well ill just use windows when I want wireless. Im usually wired anyway. But no, through my little messings I accidently double clicked on the network manager and found it was reading my SSID's. I think most people dont realize that Ubuntu comes with a good wireless manager built in. (should be top right corner should be next to volume)

anyway, for all the people out there still trying to get wireless working heres a few tips that are almost ALWAYS left out.

make sure you have "enabled wireless" ticked

1. When you get NDISwrapper you can goto system / admin / windows wireless drivers what you want to do here is actually find the .inf file associated with your wireless card. Its using your windows driver(duh) so you should already have it on your computer somewhere. a nice trick to finding it is going into the terminal (applications>system tools>root terminal) and typing locate *.inf

if you cant find it, dont fret. if you goto the companies website (for example, dell) they usually have the drivers up for download for free. you can download it and then install it with the windows wireless drivers program.

if I havent helped you, you can message me and I might be able to go into more depth.

If you're not sure about linux or ubuntu, give it a shot. its free and much better than Windows or OSX. Very secure, no viruses. and you're in complete control.

the absolute easiest way to install it is to goto this websit: wubi-installer.org/ and download the file (1mb) and you can install or uninstall ubuntu linux just like any other windows program you already have.

YOU DONT GET ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( gawdz

Pretty common occurance in these forums. I find im usually linked to Nazism. When infact I make it very clear im at least 50% Slavic. Shows how stupid some of the sheep (not referring to nintendo fans) are around here.

Why? because I think people should take care of themselves. Nazis loved big government... I dont. But youll never register that will you?

The point of this blog isnt to argue how little children who dont grasp the idea of capitalism has nothing to with Nazism. Its actually to clear up some misinformation about myself.

If theres any topic you want me to go off about, feel free. im an open book.
