Geeking Out on Final Fantasy

I have to admit, I was more excited than I should have been about Final Fantasy XII's sequel being on Nintendo DS. For Christmas this past year, my husband gave me a Final Fantasy III DS Lite complete with the Japanese version of Final Fantasy III (which I play in tandem with the English FF3 version). My fangirl glee was overwhelming when I opened that shiny package of 1337 FF goodness. Since then, I've been slowly accumulating all of the GBA ports of the older games (though I have them already on the original SNES and the PS1 ports). I've been eagerly anticipating a true DS port of a Final Fantasy game because, to be perfectly honest, the graphics for FF3 are pretty impressive for a portable system (a far cry from the capabilities of my husband's GBA SP). The news that Square-Enix was putting a sequel to 12 on the DS caused a good chorus of fangirl squealing, followed by a rabid search on all my favorite game retailers to see if there was, perchance, any pre-orders available (which there weren't at the time that I'm writing this). It's on my watch list. IT SHALL BE MINE! =) A typical weekend night in the Casper household consisted recently of my husband playing Final Fantasy 12, my son playing Zelda: Twilight Princess (we have a widescreen DLP that we split so we can play our GameCube and PS2 simultaneously), and my forays into Second Life Final Fantasy RPG as a Seventh Heaven barmaid. In between looking at my husband's choices of gambits for the hunt he was trying for me and "serving" Carbuncle Cocktails to Midgar patrons, I had my DS open to Final Fantasy 3 so I could level up my party to my satisfaction. My husband recently bought a new laptop. I convinced him that our naming scheme for our desktops and portables should be Final Fantasy characters whilst our laptops should be spells from said series. This has led to my computer being Lucrecia, my son's computer being Cloud, our video iPod is Sephiroth, and our laptops are Holy & Esuna. Square-Enix would be proud that I have instilled crazy brand loyalty into everyone in my immediate family through minor obsessions with their video games. ;) My 6-yr-old son can't tell you the names of the Wiggles, but he can tell you exactly who Squall, Sephiroth, and Balthier are. =)
