I didn't try the firefox 3.0a as I would rather avoid using alpha software. However, you did give me the idea to try other browsers.
I installed the most recent version of "Opera" and the Gnome web browser "Epiphany". In opera I got the same result in site embedded flash video, but the new flash video player worked fine, which I guess is better than nothing. Whereas in Epiphany the results were identical to firefox; I believe this is because they both use the Gecko engine, whereas Opera uses Presto.
I know I represent a minority demographic of your users, but I have been having problems over the past few months as streaming flash video content has been introduced; firstly in user generated content; and more recently in site wide content due to the shift towards flash from the mpeg standard.
I use the Linux distro, Ubuntu 7.04 (fully updated) with firefox 2.0.0.4 and Adobe's Flash plugin 9.0 r31 for Linux. Overall the site is compatible with my OS, with the said exception of streaming flash video content (other flash content incurs no issues). When the flash plugin loads streaming content the "firefox" process takes up 100% of CPU in the "systems monitor", but does not crash Firefox. In some site intergrated user generated content (eg blogs etc...) the video does play, but is very cloppy and takes frequent pauses. Whereas the new flash video player to replace the old Mpeg streams, however, fails to play the media at all, while also taking 100% of my CPU in the "systems monitor".
I have tried to reporduce the issue on other systems, both my own and by asking several other linux user to test the issue, and all have similar results. This is not a problem with flash video content in general on linux systems, but seems to be gamespot specific issue as it does work on popular sites such as youtube and even on Gamespot's sister sites such as CNET.com. Interestingly the front page's flash video preview box for features and popular trailers does not suffer from this issue, although I do recall that feature is relativily older than the recent changes.
I would be happy to provide more information if needed.
