My new love for Metroidvania

When Castlevania Symphony of the Night was released on the 360 Live arcade many months ago, I bought it and played through the first boss and that was about it.

Recently I picked it up again and I am instantly completely overjoyed about how awesome it is.

Previous to this, the original 8-bit NES Castlevania was the only game in he series I had played and I did not really care for it. I guess it was because of how unfairly unbalanced the difficulty was.

Upon picking up SOTN I was given a fantastic 2D Gothic action adventure game with a Leveling system that allows you to power up to even the odds against the sometimes incredibly powerful foes. As with any Action RPG, it really does feel like every kill is adding to your characters potential power and that is why I find it so enthralling. The Graphics are also some of the best 2D Sprite work I have ever seen. All in all I am having an amazing time hunting down Dracula.

I have also picked up all three GBA games and have already started playing through Circle of the Moon which I hear is the least great of the GBA games. I cant wait to get to Harmony and Aria sometime soon.

Anyway, as much as the term "Mertoidvania" is put down, it sure does a hell of a good job explaining the gameplay style.

Any Way, in other news - I have been playing some awesome games lately. Thats probably because this is the time of year where the best games start to finally come out.

I am deeply in love with Super Mario Galaxy. This is the game we bought our Wiis for.

I am also playing throuh Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - Yes it is only the first two games with bonus content but it is still very awesome.

A game I need to get back to is The Orange Box. I have finished Portal,HL2,and Episode 1. Now I am going into Episode 2 - I hear it is awesome.

Next week marks the release of Mass Effect, Rockband, and Unchated Drakes Fortune - So many games, so little time.

Anyway - Happy Gaming and bye for now.

Free DLC as a valid marketing strategy? - Yes please!

Pinball FX for XBOX Live Arcade is a game that I have had my eye on for quite some time. The main reason I did not pick it up at the time of its release was due to the fact that the game had only 3 tables and was 800 points($10). I just could not justify purchasing the game at a price to content scale like that. A few days ago that changed. Zen Studios released a brand new Pirate themed table on the marketplace completely free of charge.

Feeling that the games value had just increased a 1/3 and my love for all things Pirate themed. I decided to take the plunge and I am glad I did.

This brings up my point of this little Blog post. Can free downloadable content be a valid marketing strategy for companies to pursue? With personal experience, I would say it definitely can. I think that a majority of people out there would be more inclined to purchase a game with the knoledge that the Value can increase with a simple cost free download.

Late Night Blog - #1 - Random thoughts edition

So it is 3:30 A.M. here and the thought of writing a blog post pops into my head so here I am.

What a great year this has been for gaming. we have already had GOTY quality games such as God of War 2 and Bioshock come out and there is just so much more to look forward to.

Like many others, I seem to have gotten a case of Halo fever lately and have been replaying through the first game and plan to move on to Halo 2 next. It will all lead up to the chance to finally "Finish The Fight" next Tuesday. I have had my Legendary edition reserved for almost a year now and have already picked out a spot for that shiny helmet.

Among other things, I played through Stranglehold a week ago, I think it is a good game but way too short to be a purchase. A great Rental though. I picked up a copy of the Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction demo for PS3 from my local Gamestop and I still think that it will be the must have game on PS3 this year.

I Downloaded the PS3 Demo for Tony Hawk Proving Ground tonight and I did not play much of it. I think the whole "tired of Tony Hawk" thing has finally hit me, I really enjoyed all the games up through American Wasteland and I have played a lot of Project 8 but I think the gameplay is starting to get a little stale for me now. One thing I think is extremely cool is the ability to place ramps and stuff right into the game world with the push of a button. other than That I dont have much to say about the latest Hawk. I do have a copy of SKATE in the mail from Gamefly Coming so we will see how I feel about EA's take on skating.

As far as upcoming releases go, I really wish Sony would release Everyday Shooter on the PSN. I have been looking forward to that game since it was announced. I cant wait for Guitar Hero 3, Orange Box, Ratchet and Clank and other big October releases to then lead into the game rush that is November. This year is just so huge.

I am looking forward to TGS 07 this week. I will be watching the Live Gamespot coverage hoping to get a look at all the great games and hopefully some great game announcements. The next Kingdom Hearts had better be there, Ive waited enough, announce it Already!. I think it is cool how TGS basically ends right as Halo 3 comes out. This is sure to be a great week for gaming.

Well those were my late night thoughts, thanks for reading. Now I have to get some sleep.
