Fanboys, my two cents worth

Just a small disclaimer before I start. I'm not writing this blog to make fun of religious beliefs or get into a debate on which console is better than the other. Nor am I trying to paint whole communities with the same brush. I'm basically trying to compare that die-hard, with me or against me attitude that both certain members of the church going community and gaming community share. If it makes any difference, I own a Playstation 3 and will more than likely be upgrading to a Playstation 4 (just felt I had to get that out there). The whole idea for this Blog came a statement made by Danny O'Dwyer "the internet is full of interesting opinions... AND ALL OF THEM ARE WRONG EXCEPT FOR ME!!!!!". It got me thinking to recent Facebook chats that I've been having with a family member who has recently found god. First of think its good for her, it has caused her to make some positive changes in her life and mix with a new crowd of people. ...Here's the part that's not so flash..... Every discussion that comes up (instigated by her no less) ends up turning into "if you don't believe what I believe, then you are stupid", not matter how many real world examples I use or how well written I am... I'm "stupid". And its not just this family member that has this attitude, many of the "born again" flavor have used this same discussion stopper. So that's pretty deep... and quite a bit of a downer. How do I deal with that? I go on a couple of video game websites (this one being my first port of call) to look up some "REAL" news. I read the articles, so far so good..... Then we get to the comments section.... Now bear in mind I ONLY look at game articles, console articles will be full of butt-hurt fanboys from the opposing sides, so I just avoid it. Back to the story, finish reading the article move down to the comments because its always interesting to see what someone else thought BOOM!!! PLAYSTATION SUCKS XBOX SUCKS I HATE YOU YOU'RE A DICK MY CONSOLE IS THE BEST YOU'RE A **** BUTT HURT BUTT HURT BUTT HURT STUPID STUPID STUPID. Most people are just trying to discuss the merits (or lack of) the article, but shouting over them are a bunch of people trying to force 'their" console onto other people (see the connection starting to form?). How does an article on Batman, Assassins Creed or GTA 5 become an all out argument on which plastic box is best? Here's a little story I shared with the above family member in one of our MANY discussions: A couple of months ago, my wife, my son and I went on a family holiday to Australia. One day I was lucky enough to go for a walk by myself (so I wanted a bit of "me" time, don't judge me) and I came across a store selling super hero stuff, even better, they had a sale table. On this table were two money boxes, one Batman and one Spiderman AND I had enough cash in my wallet (which I left back in the hotel room) for one. I tell my wife what I've found and proudly tell her that I'm going to buy our son the Batman money box (My son only just turned 2 recently). "What if he doesn't like Batman?" was the response "So.... I'll get the Spiderman one then?....." My wife, being somewhat ahead of the game than me, asked "what if he doesn't like spiderman either?" Me, being not as quick as my wife, hadn't even thought of that. Is it such a bad thing to let people choose their own super heroes, their own religions or their own gaming machine (or kick a ball around?... just putting it out there)? Is it going to impact on you and your world of someone thinks or plays differently to you? I'm not pointing fingers at the whole religious and gaming communities, but it is the few of you that are letting the rest down. Its not about right or wrong, its about having enough respect to let people have fun their own way. That just my two cents worth.. (and my first blog so be nice)
