Tomb Raider review taken from ign

The reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise was inevitable in all honesty, the franchise hasn't being on top form for at least the last eight years with the last decent outing being Tomb Raider: Legend, the first game developed by U.S dev Crystal Dynamics. However this appears to be the first they have wanted to make and is a much needed step in the right direction for the Struggling franchise. The story begins with the ship Lara is living aboard, the H.M.S Endurance being shipwrecked of the coast of the island of Yamatai, leaving Lara and her crew stranded on the mysterious island. To make matters worse after washing up on the shore she is almost immediately knocked out, where she awakes to find herself trapped inside the cave. After a very scripted Unchartedesque escape the game begins to open up and becomes its own game. The game is structured using a hub approach, allowing the game to become a mixture of open-ish exploration and a more scripted experience, which in the scheme of things works very well with the exploration allowing you to feel the island is a real place and the scripted parts giving you an insight into the character that Crystal Dynamics has created for this reboot. The character of Lara is very well rounded making you genuinely feel for the character and the situations she finds herself in, the quality of the character is slightly a double edged sword as the characters she finds herself with are no where near as well realised as Lara herself, meaning that you don't really care about the peril her friends find themselves in, however the story is otherwise generally well written giving you a reason to stick around till the credits roll. However it isn't just the story that will keep you playing as the combat this time around has being perfected making every weapon and gunfight heavy and brutal, you'll feel the power of the bow, the impact of the shotgun and the recoil of the assault rifle. The crafting system on show is deep but at the same time simple, the basic way to improve weapons and equipment is as follows, for every animal killed and box searched you gain salvage used to improve things such as fire rate and reload speed, the second way to upgrade weapons is to find weapon parts this the allows you to create better versions of existing weapons, such as going from a old hunting bow to a professional bow, which I found to be a tad unrealistic. This gen appears to be the generation of the reboot as Devil May Cry, Syndicate, X-com and Tomb Raider have all received reboots in the past two years but this is one the best iv'e seen. I think think this game deserves a nine out of ten. Do you think this game deserved a reboot or should have been left to die quietly, tell me in the comments.
