I'm not sure, but maybe POP has some Shader Model 3.0 effects that you couldn't see with the Radeon 9800 PRO, like HDR lighting or something. Some people don't like the look of HDR.
I liked both games, but Doom 3 looked absolutely stunning on Ultra settings at a high resolution, and complete with surround sound, it was a very atmospheric experience.
Apparently they are taking a hint from id Software. They often remove the CD check about a month or two after the game hits shelves, since that's when most of the pirating occurs.
In terms of real usage, the Cell processor is really not much better (if any) than the X360's processor. Quad Core is much, much better than either of these.
