game is a bit of a one trick pony, but that one trick it does is fucking brilliant. And it should have stuck with it, and probably should have finished awhile ago, because the other stuff can **** off.
This, totally this.
I do however feel for the game it had some astronomical expectations to live up to and for a developer who doesn't usually do this kind of shit they nailed it pretty hard when they wanted too. What killed it was the pacing after the first great section of the game, it falls into the typical trap of "More is better, so shits just gotta keep ramping up!"
They needed to focus on the one on one we had with the Alien, they needed to build on the tools we had making us more powerfull all the while making sure that every time we tried to show the Alien who was boss he would bitch slap us and show us what true terror really is and that no ammount of firepower was going to keep you safe.
As soon as you get that damn flamethrower the game just becomes a mad dash and flash whenever the alien gets too close. Mechanically it was great to show us growing in power but it defeated the purpose of the game, it made the one thing you were supposed to be terrified of even seeing an easy escape, less of something to be afraid of and more of something groan about as you aimed down the sights of your alien pepper spray.
If they were going to include fucking humans, make sure we had to use them to our advantage. Make it impossible to cross a god damn room without turning every other human into a screaming flank steak for the alien while you madly rushed to accomplish your goals amid a slaughter while avoiding becoming part of it yourself. Anroids? While it was fucking cool to watch the first one cave a guys head in, they were never a threat and only a threat as in that you couldn't confront them many times without pissing off the Alien.
All things considered though the start of the game is marvelous and I just wish they could have kept building on that. We all knew the whole predator prey thing would probably overstay its welcome and it did, the developers sadly just let it happen and didn't do anything about it. Instead they just throw more at your thinking it's somehow going to get better. I wholeheartedly recomend this to ANYONE who wants to know how horror in games should be done.
Just not the whole thing.
Shit like this and Silent Hills make me feel like a new age of horror could be coming, and the Resident Evil 4 era is ready to faceplant into the grave, because **** what that game did to the horror genre...**** it.
