So what's really been irking me at the moment is the current trend for box art to use the same image several times. I understand that you might be pressed for images, but really, must I honestly see the same image three, maybe four times before I actually start playing? This trend seems to be particularly prevelant in EA titles, as all three of my EA titles, Burnout Paradise, skate. and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 (what?! A gamer must have at least ONE relaxing game!)
I'll open Burnout Paradise to start, shall I? Well on the cover the first thing I see is that wonderfully simplistic cover with the blue and red car on it. Lovely. Now I'll open the box. What do I see? Two more! One on the booklet and another on the disk. Now, I like the cover as much as the next guy, but not THAT much.
On to the next title, skate.. Yes, double full stop. Anyways, on the front is that weird black and white photo of a boards wheel. Simplistic and Artistic (like Burnouts). Open the box and-oh! Another one on the booklet! Thanks!
But PGA Tour 09 just takes the cake and throws it at your dog. On the front we have that photo of Tiger in the green shirt taking a chip shot, with the EA Sports banner and logo at the bottom, and a weird grid sky. Open the box and oh! Two more! One on the disk and on the booklet! But it gets better. Pop the disk into the console, and on the title, the background changes so I can see it AGAIN! I quickly start the game up to get rid of it in a hurry. Phew! Safe, right? Wrong! The title screen has it as well! Aaaaahh!!
Now I've heard of promotional imagery, but this is just silly. Why must I be forced to see the same image over and over again? Was it really the best photo you had? A common trend happens in books as well. See the title on the cover. Ok, sure, nice title. Open the book. Oh! There it is again! And when you turn the page to get rid of the darn thing, the next one has it as well! What?
