First off, it's not FFT. I know people can't help themselves by starting an obvious, yet ignorant, debate on this.
It still has a simple and light-hearted story like FFTA, it isn't going to make anyone cry from what I can predict and have seen so far. I can't really tell you about character development, but it seems you slowly learn about people as the game goes on, instead of knowing almost everything you need to know right off the bat like in FFTA. The Bazaar system is a nice addition and allows for people to work for their equipment and job changes, unlike FFTA that pretty much gave you everything as time passes.
If you're interested, I don't want to ruin it for you. I personally think it's better than FFTA, and that is a game I easily spend 500+ hours on since originally purchasing it. I also enjoyed FFT, and I can honestly say I like them all, but FFT and FFTA/A2 only share a few similarities, but that is fine.
If all else fails, rent it or wait until more information is written up on it.
(That is, if you don't have it. This post is geared towards this.)

simple and lighthearted? I disagree. there's actually some good life advice in this game. ...You don't want to ruin it for him? then be a little bit more polite. ...."Rent it or wait until more information is written up on it" Wow, I can't believe you just said that.
