@tsmech88: Sounds like you don't like walking simulators. I do. I can't stand sports game and online games just aren't my cup of tea. A lot of people apparently liked Firewatch. Everyone is different.
@El_Zaggy: I think everyone knows it's a walking simulator at this point. Whether the story is good or not is up for discussion, as many people thought it was brilliant, while some ppl like you thought it wasn't good. Sorry you didn't like it.
@billzihang: That was my first "walking simulator". Firewatch seems like it has a more coherent plot. Less philosophy and more human interaction (well, interaction over a walkie-talkie).
@xantufrog: I bought it last week and I've been obsessed with it. I keep seeing line puzzles in real life cuz I've been playing it so frequently. It will wreck your brain but I felt that if you get stuck, put it down, do something else and come back to it and you'll think about it differently. It's a truly expertly crafted puzzle game. I'd put it right up there with Portal as one of the best modern puzzle games. The graphics and sound design are amazing as well. The sound it makes when you solve an environmental puzzle still gives me shivers! Whether it's worth $40 or not comes down to how much enjoyment you get out of puzzle games. I personally thought it was worth it, but I can also see why others would not. I've put in about 20 hours and I'm about 300/650 puzzles completed.
@billzihang: It's a first person exploration-based game similar to Gone Home or Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. No combat or side missions, just a well-written story with amazing graphics and solid voice acting.
