Okay! sorry it's a day late but here's part 2 of my top 10 list!
Before I start tho, i wanna give this a little disclaimer. These are purely my opinion and are based off of my favorite games personally, not any kind of non-biased review. So these probably will differ from most people's lists. I also wanted to defend my choice of Halo 2 a little bit. A lot of people disagreed with me putting up Halo 2 in my last list and don't worry, i can see why. I think it is an overrated game as well. But that's why it was number 6 and not number 1 like some people would put it at. I personally do love the campaign of Halo 2 and think it's the best storyline of any first person shooter i've ever played. Last post, i said that there was a trend to most of my pics and this trend, i will say now, is storyline's. Aside from Pong, every game i picked, i picked because i loved the story's. I plan on becoming a writer when i'm out of college and therefore, storylines are very important to me. Just because storylines are important to me, doesn't mean that the gameplay isn't though, I think that Halo really did revolutionize the way people look at first person shooters and Halo 2 does a really good job of following up on that. The only real criticism i would give it is that the weapons are far too unbalanced. Unlike Halo, Halo 2's multiplayer is all about getting the best weapon and is far less about real skill. any noob with a rocket launcher can kill a highly skilled player. But I still think that aside from the balance issues (which i hear they fixed really well on Halo 3 from some beta players), it's still a great game and is the highest played original xbox game on live (beat only by Gears of War on the 360). That's why I picked halo 2 as one of my top 10. Hopefully that clears some stuff up and helps you understand my list a little better.
And with that out of the way, heres my top 5 games! I've thought a lot over the past few days about which games i'm picking so if you want to understand why i picked a game and you don't feel i explained it enough in my short explination, please comment and i'll explain further.
5. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC) - 2001
Without a doubt the best party game for any age. While it lacks any kind of coherent storyline at all, at least it doesn't try and give us some laughable plot that would just wreck the game. Super Smash Bros Melee is a great game for all skill levels and accomodates everyone well. A newbie can pick up the game and have just as much fun with it as a master. Also, with fully customizable game modes, you can make the game into anything you could want. If you don't like items, you can turn them off or if you love item battles, you can make the drop rate extremely high and have items everywhere. You can increase the damage ratio for a really quick match or turn it down for a drawn out skill battle. Individual handicaps allow for newbies to play along with masters and actually stand a chance. Throw in countless unlockable features and cool trophies that give info on your favorite games and tell you about more obscure titles and you have a great single player adventure as well. Honestly the must buy for anyone with a gamecube or a wii for that matter. Even after 6 years, this party game god is still played by tons of people. Nothing's better than getting a bunch of friends over and playing for a few hours :D.
4. Halo (Xbox) - 2001
Bet you didn't see this coming :P. Yes Halo is the FPS that truly revolutionized how the first person shooter is played. With an incredible sci-fi story that any gamer will enjoy if they take the time to delve into the complex universe of Halo and an incredible new combat system with tons of drivable vehicles, this truly is the best game on the Xbox. That's saying a lot too since it was a launch game! No one was really expecting tons when this game first came out, but now it has one of the biggest fan bases of any game ever, rivaling even the great FFVII. People camped out for weeks when Halo 2 was announced and surely they will again for Halo 3. With one of the best multiplayers on any console FPS, this is an obvious pick for the top 5.
3. Grandia 2 (DC) - 2000
Heres one I bet you really didn't see coming. Grandia 2 is personally, my favorite RPG of all time and has the best battle system of any turn based RPG by far. It's hard to explain the full system in this short explanation but it really gets you into the battle and has you sitting on the edge of your seat the whole time. Every battle can be decided by a split second win or loss. It's a tough game that will have you putting tons of hours into it but you'll be kept interested by the great fighting system and the incredible storyline. All the characters are great and none will really bug you at all like most RPG's. One of the first console games with full voiceovers for all the characters, it has tons of revolutionary aspects about it. If you don't have a Dreamcast, you can also play the remake on the Playstation 2 or PC.
2. Chrono Trigger (SNES) - 1995
Chrono Trigger. Debatably Square's best work. It spawned tons of fan made games, a sequel and so many pics of cosplayers on google that the rest of us are terrified. Even though the main character, Crono, never talks throughout the entire game, people love his DBZ inspired appearance and is always one of the top picks on Gamefaqs character battles. A great cast of supporting characters including my personal favorite, Frog with his knightly talk despite his Frog-ish appearance, make this game an incredible game for it's time. over 10 years and people are still begging for another sequel. Maybe Square will pull a blizzard and announce a new Chrono game soon? doubtful, yet everyone still hopes!
And my number 1 game. I want to say that I thought long and hard about what game would be number 1. It had to be an incredible game that revolutionized it's genre more so than anything else. It also had to be something that people still love today. And so i picked...
1. Chrono Cross (PS) - 2000
If you don't think that Chrono Trigger is square's best work, then you're most likely voting for Chrono Cross. I know a lot of people will criticize this pick because it's not FFVII but honestly, Chrono Cross was far more revolutionary than FFVII could ever dream of being. CC uses a completely unique battle system that has never been used before (or since for that matter) and it works perfectly. It adds a lot of before battle strategy and tons of in battle strategy as well. Although it unfortunately has almost nothing to do with Chrono Trigger before it, people love it just as much as the original. The plot leaves lots of room for analysis and doesn't leave everything set in stone which really works perfectly for the game. People are still talking about the plot now and debating about what it all means and what things are symbolic of and whatnot. Basically if you are a fan of games in general, you must buy this game. Not only is it a reciever of the perfect 10 on GS but it also has recieved perfect scores from countless other websites and magazines and has won more awards than most games on the market ever have.
Well, that's my top 10 list. If you want to know why i picked a certain game, please comment and I will explain. Also, if you feel strongly about other games, please make your own top 10 list. I'm curious to see what other people pick. Well, got to go everyone! Peace! I look forward to your criticism :P
