I honestly don't see why RE4 gets so much praise, I played the original RE and that one was so much more immersive and intense then RE4 ever was....

It's not just the characters though it's other stuff, the game just isn't scary any more. I guess that's why stalker become abit of a hit with people, it was devoid of glamour, hunky male leads and sexy sidekicks looking cool, with some large mutant end-boss. You just looked like a nobody and were not the center of attention trying to save the universe with stylish cut-scenes.
