[quote="next-gen biz"]In a recent interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly, Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton says high expectations for the PlayStation 3 have been a hurdle for the company. With over 110 million units shipped worldwide, the PS2 has proven to be a tough act to follow.
As reported in an interview excerpt at EGM’s online sibling 1UP, Tretton says, “Because we're in that leadership position, there are a lot of expectations thrust upon us and some of them are a little unrealistic.”
He continues, “If we were a distant third in the platform race, people would have a warm spot in their hearts for the good old days of PlayStation and they'd actually root for us to get back on top. But I don't know if we want to pay the price to get that kind of [love]."
While the huge success of the PS2 may have built up an overly optimistic view of the PS3 for some people, Sony execs have a knack for hyping their gaming products to the moon, with promises of a “4D” gaming experience and pre-launch claims that next-gen gaming wouldn’t begin until the PS3 hit the market.
Sony aims to ship 6 million PS3s worldwide by the end of its fiscal year in March, and had shipped 2 million units worldwide as of mid-January.
Regardless of mounting pressure from rivals, Tretton is confident that Sony will remain a leader in the console race. “I think we've got a better machine,” he says when asked about competition from Microsoft’s Xbox 360. “I think we've got a better business model, and I think we're going to win in the long term.”
