If it Ain't Broke.....

While this well known saying seems to make sense in many industries, Gaming seems to be the one industry it doesn't apply to. We are at the point in gaming where everything seems to have been done before. We have defended earth from aliens. We know how to gather resources, amass gigantic armies, and then proceed to crush all our neighbors. We have stormed the beach at Normandy and kicked Hitler's A** more times than we'd care to mention. Defeating our friends by 80 points in Madden has lost its appeal as well. Yes, the time is finally at hand for the innovators. The time for better graphics and one new feature with each new sequel has come and gone. Back in the day, games were exciting because studios were not afraid to come up with new ideas. Now with the advent of big gaming and the huge production budgets that most games carry, it has become common place to simply stick to what works. Occasionally, a game like spore is announced and promises to innovate. However, the new and exciting ideas that were once common place are now hidden behind the layer upon layer of common trash spewing from the likes of gaming giant EA Games. Mind you, these games are never exactly bad, but then they are not good either. This accounts for the bloated amount of games with scores of 7 and 8 from gamespot and the extreme rarity of 9s. Maybe one of these days a company will realize we don't just want more of the same and give us the next Super Mario 64, the next Wolfenstien, or the next Starcraft. Until then, the gaming industry won't be seeing very many of my dollars.
