The problem with stealth as merely an option is that if you can shoot your way out of every situation, there's no longer any sense of tension. You lose the feeling of vulnerability that a pure stealth game delivers.

I have high hopes for Dishonored, but I still don't expect the game to provide that wonderful feeling of dread that Thief so perfectly captured. Similar to what has happened with the survival horror genre, developers today lack the confidence to make games that don't cater first and foremost to the action crowd, and so most of what we end up with are watered-down hybrids.
