Why not just create a website, as an offshoot as this community? There are plenty of ways, even if you are not neccessarily webdesigners, and scripters. You could use something like Invisionboard, which has a fairly decent portal system for posting news clippings, and other assorted infos. If this is the route that Gamespot is going, then I would just make provisions to create another community. Even Facebook or Google+ would substitute, given that they allow the creation of themed groups. As much as I dispise social networking in general, it is another way to still be all collaborative or whatnot. We are no longer stuck in a 2004 world, as much as nostalgia keeps wanting me to go further back in time. =P
Like illbitcrusher said, that article is very old. I remember when it was first announced on ShenmueDojo. Its sad that such an old article is the last bit of relatively decent news on Shenmue to date.
In my opinion, i don't think it will be the fan's decision when it comes down to the death of Final Fantasy. Personally i believe in time Square/Enix will just decide that they'll probably end the final fantasy and make way for a new franchise or at least Final Fantasy will no longer be bound to the RPG label. We can see this formulating in Dirge of Cerberus with the more action orientated gameplay. I also agree that in time they will give up with the numbering system of the games because it 'will' start to sound rediculous eventually even though the series contracted itself when it made FF2 :P
Personally i don't think there will be any other RPG in the coming years with the adept storytelling that has made Final Fantasy so popular. If Shadow Hearts could create some type of emotional connection between the game characters and the player in the way Final Fantasy does (by actually making likeable characters :P), maybe i would have considered defecting. I adore FF's philosophical edge that seems to have me captivated more than any other RPG's that have come my way...although i still believe that Shenmue is an example of genius storytelling. I still believe that Final Fantasy still has a long life-span left...
I was just reading the may issue of game informer on page 25 it has a lil news of the FF7 remake. . . It not only says it's happening but that the battle system will be changed to something akin of the FF 12 battle systemKhimarhi

Well he just said that his source was Game Informer and he gave the page number. I've had a look on their website and i can't find any information however they are still advertising their April edition so the website maybe a little behind. Although its crept up on the IGN boards as well in one or two posts. Just rumours and i don't think anything substanciated can be gathered from it.
