Well I guess it is time, time to make my first blog.
Yes, it is about the VT shootings.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who were affected by these horrific events.
While this is about the events that happened today, it is an unrelated side effect. An innocent bystander was brought into this madness. Wayne Chiang is an Asian, 2006 VT graduate, lived in the same dorm as the first shooting, gun enthusiast and recently broke up with his girlfriend. This led the "great" Internet Detectives to his Facebook and other personal websites/blogs. Within a few hours, he received at least 200k hits and dozens of death threats. The most ridiculous part of this whole situation, is the shooter killed himself... So why would any "sane" person send death threats to an already dead recipient? While I have had no direct contact with Wayne, other then today to post my disgust at his current situation, I am a member on some firearm forums and had read some of his posts.
A link to a article about Wayne's situation.
I myself am an avid gun collector and outspoken gun enthusiast. I believe every law-abiding citizen has the right to own and carry firearms for self-defense. With what happened today, it just makes it clearer, in my opinion, that views and laws of firearms and concealed carry liscenses need to change.
What we saw in the Utah mall shooting, was an off-duty police officer, just as easily could have been a civilian with a concealed weapon, was able to engage and distract the shooter from his plans of slaughtering as many people as possible. This could have been the case in Virginia. About a year ago, a Bill was denied that would have allowed students with concealed carry permits to carry on campus. A PR representative for VT voice his and the school's satisfaction and relief that the bill was shot down.
