Oh dude, i feel your pain.
My 60gb launch PS3 died this past Saturday. So much for the luck of the Irish.
I debated the same thing with myself as to whether or not I should get it repaired or buy a new one. It came down to this.
$100-$150 to ship it (it costs 18$ to send a letter registered mail here so I figured if I was lucky then it would probably cost $100-$150 for shipping)+ $150 to get it repaired. So 250-300 plus tax.
Cost of getting a new PS3 slim =$283 (tax included). So it was almost the same amount.
But if I got my old PS3 repaired, there was no guarantee that it would stay fixed. No guarantee my new slim will not break but I'd say it's chances are better than the old one's.
For me, the only reason to get it fixed would be to keep the PS2 backwards compatibility and to be honest I don't play PS2 games very often. I have enough PS3 games in my backlog to keep me busy for quite some time.
Of course it's a real pain redownloading all my psn content and I did loose some other save files but I did have a back-up I did six months ago so all was not lost. I had been thinking last weekend it was about time to backup my hard drive. I was a week late on that one unfortunately.
RIP (February 22, 2007 - March 17, 2012) 60gb PS3. Loved by me. You served me well and will be missed.
So I would recommend just buying a new one.
