Oh dude, i feel your pain.

My 60gb launch PS3 died this past Saturday. So much for the luck of the Irish.

I debated the same thing with myself as to whether or not I should get it repaired or buy a new one. It came down to this.

$100-$150 to ship it (it costs 18$ to send a letter registered mail here so I figured if I was lucky then it would probably cost $100-$150 for shipping)+ $150 to get it repaired. So 250-300 plus tax.

Cost of getting a new PS3 slim =$283 (tax included). So it was almost the same amount.

But if I got my old PS3 repaired, there was no guarantee that it would stay fixed. No guarantee my new slim will not break but I'd say it's chances are better than the old one's.

For me, the only reason to get it fixed would be to keep the PS2 backwards compatibility and to be honest I don't play PS2 games very often. I have enough PS3 games in my backlog to keep me busy for quite some time.

Of course it's a real pain redownloading all my psn content and I did loose some other save files but I did have a back-up I did six months ago so all was not lost. I had been thinking last weekend it was about time to backup my hard drive. I was a week late on that one unfortunately.

RIP (February 22, 2007 - March 17, 2012) 60gb PS3. Loved by me. You served me well and will be missed.

So I would recommend just buying a new one.

Happy Birthday PS3!

I did not get mine at launch. I got my 60 gb (now 320 :)) in February 2007. It was a bit expensive when it first came out but when it went down to$630 I beelined straight to the store and bought one. I certainly don't regret paying that much though considering what it has that the new slims don't. Backwards compatible (yay!) and 4 usb ports. Plus a blu-ray drive (yeah I know the slim has a BRD as well :)) which I seem to recall blu-ray players costing something along the lines of 500$ back in 06.

I too remember the dark days where there weren't many games available and no trophies. :( But then Uncharted came along and it's been all uphill since then. I still remember how much the graphics on Uncharted blew me away.

Speaking of price I have always found ita bit odd that the PS3 got as much slack as it did when it launched. I seem to remember them being about $700-$799 at launch (or there abouts). I never remember the PS2 getting that much slack and it was 699$ at launch. I remember that because I almost bought a PS2 at launch and decided to wait for price cut. When you consider what the PS3 can do (and inflation) compared to the PS2 the original price of the PS3 doesn't seem that bad to me.

I got it yesterday afternoon and played it for a few hours last night. I like it so far. I'm not sure how much I like the fact that the aim and shoot are L2 and R2 but I'm sure i'll get used to it. I'm not sure if you can change the controller settings. Maybe I did not try hard enough though to figure it out.

I'm looking forard to playing it after work today.

If you like GTA IV then you'll probably like this one as well.

Buzz! Quiz World is a fun party game. But if you are not into trivia games then you probably won't like it.

Yes. If it has 4 USB slots and memory card readers then yep. It's also a hardware BC. 80GB had software BC. From what i remember, Hardware BC = more reliable.

I've never had any problems with mine but apparently there are some PS2 games that don't work quite right.

You can check this link to see which of your PS2 games work.

On the XMB, Settings, System Info.

New HDDs are fairly easy to install and not too expensive these days.

I too suffer from this horrible affliction. :D I would not call it a hefty one but yeah I have Fallout3, C&C 3 Red Alert, R&C Future and Condemned 2 which I have yet to play/finish. Probably a bunch of PS2 games as well. I was going to start C&C, then do Fallout3 after being done inFamous. Then I got Dead Space and NHL 10 came out so they have been bumped down on the priority list. They aren't going anywhere though so I am sure I'll get around to it sooner or later.

I too have decided not to get Uncharted 2and a bunch of other games until I have done these, or at least played them for a bit. But Christmas is just around the corner.

I feel your pain.
